6.9 High Pressure Steering Hose

I bought one about a year ago from the Classic Centre.  I still have the old one and it was not leaking when I changed it out if you're in bind.

I replaced the HP hose 7 months ago.

A local "hose workshop" put in a new rubber hose. I used the old metal pipes and connections at both ends. A low-cost solution that works perfectly (so far).

You'll have to specify if you have a right hand drive or a left hand drive because there are two different high pressure hoses for each version. 

The left hand drive version, part number 100-997-46-82, shows to be no longer available. 

The right hand drive version, part number 116-997-83-82, shows to be no longer available, too. 

You may want to check with the Classic center, as they sometimes have stock of parts that Mercedes proper doesn't. 

Alternatively, you an have the rubber portion renewed as Jan did, as the fittings on the end literally screw apart.  However, it must be remembered that in the middle of the rubber hose there is an orifice to control pump pulsations and noise.  It must be cut out of the old hose and installed in the new hose.

Ups! ....... I didn't know of the orifice .... and neither did the hose workshop  :(

UTn_boy; should I prepare myself for any severe consequences short-term/long-term? Pump failure? Steering box wear? What do you think?

In my case .... the workshop tried to screw the hose and the fitting apart, without luck. They had to cut the metal pipe and attach a new fitting.

I tried, but it didn't work out in my case.

As you can see from the pic I was able to unscrew the hose with the metal "cap/ring" from the rest of the fitting that goes to the pump. But it was impossible to remove the hose from that "ring". After 46 years the hose was stuck .... It felt as if the hose was glued to the "ring". I twisted the hose and in the end it disintegrated. The inside of the "ring" looked like a mess.

I changed tactics. The hose-workshop offered to cut the thin metal pipe (see black line in pic) - both at pump and steering box end (as close to the hose as possible, i.e. keep as much of the pipe as possible) - and attach a new fitting. Between the two new fittings they added a new hose. Now I can easily remove and attach the new hose if necessary, with two wrenches.

A footnote: the thin metal pipe has to be straight and of a certain length in order to assemble a new fitting.

Got it, that's what I'm thinking if I go that route. Just have the shop use their own fittings.

Lastly, I hope. Regarding the role played by the outer hose as mentioned by UTn.boy, can this outer hose just be pulled-off intact once one end fitting is cut off with the idea of slipping it over the new hose?

The outer pipe has coarse threads that grip the hose very firmly.
You need to unscrew the hose from the outer pipe.
The hose won't come out if you just pull on it.

John, I believe it's one hose only with some sort of orifice (metal piece?) in the middle .... but I'm not sure.

I wasn't aware of the orifice, as mentioned by UTn_boy. So my hose is without the orifice (mistake  >:( ). But works fine so far, but you never know what the medium-term consequences will be.

I tried really hard to unscrew the hose, but it was impossible. The hose workshop also gave it a try, unsuccessful. That's why I changed tactics.

The cap part that screws on to the hose is left hand thread on the inside.  You turn the hose clockwise to screw the hose out of this part.  If it's stuck, you simply cut/pry the hose out.   


The orifice missing probably won't cause any mechanical damage, but may be noisy at times.

Hopefully I kept the old HP hose, I will take a look in the garage at the weekend.

Is this orifice a piece of metal e.g. a short piece of metal pipe that you put inside the hose? You can cut the hose open, take the orifice out and reuse it in the new hose?

Of note, once I saw the leaking fluid, I tightened down on a hose clamp near the end of the outer hose. Temp fix worked which makes me think that repeating the process over a new hose could mirror the orifice. Never said I was the smartest guy in the world.
