Hi everyone
I found this radial seal that matches the dimensions of the 6.9 front crank seal.
It is double lip and the material seems to be right for the job.
Did anyone ever use a seal other then original Mercedes on a crank? Any experiences?

There are a few guys on there who have rebuilt their 6.9 motors recently. Notably member "Randy" in Australia.
Nice find!
Where can it be purchased?
I'm actually doing some work on my 6.9 now, I have the water pump off and doing the timing chain. How hard is it to do the front seal? I heard that crank bolt is torqued on ridiculously tight.
Yup like 400nm or thereabouts :o
With SKF, you should be in good hands, though, even if they're made in China these days. Ohlins also uses many of their OEM parts and QC/tolerances are as sharp as they come.

Ebay, just search for the part number.
I payed $18 incl. shipping.
You need a puller to remove the hub and a way to hold the crank while applying 400nm to the crank nut.
I saw somewhere, maybe m100.cc, that a flywheel lock for a Porsche 944 works on a 6.9. I happen to be a 944 guy so I already have that tool.
But I don't think I'll bother right now. It's not leaking, and I don't want to buy a torque wrench that goes up to 400Nm.
Hi all,
Yes the 944 tool does work, I've used it. A suitable torque wrench can be hired for the job, but you will find a long pipe will be required for leverage, like at least a yard/metre long!

That is good to know if I ever come into that situation, because I have a feeling the Porsche 928 tool (I have the combo flywheel lock for 16V and 32V engines) should work for the 450SEL then too...I might just have to try that some time.
