6.9 Fan Clutch Diagnosis

Cars been running hot. Read, and want to confirm, two things to check regarding the fan clutch. First, unlike many cars, if clutch is ok the fan should not to free-wheel when the engine is off  and secondly, once you start the engine when its cold, you should hear the initial whrrr, which will then subsides. Correct?

It should never freewheel.

IMHO you should replace any fan clutch over 20 years old.  they just wear out over time.
