6.9 and early W126 half shafts

I removed the half shafts from the W126 500SEL final drive today. Despite their appearance with clamping pieces, they are the same as the W116 units. I am not going to cancel the re-booting of the 6.9 units that were dropped off at the Star Shop on Saturday.
I suspect it is late (post '86) W126s with the flanged inner joint.

I'll upload pics as soon as I reboot my PC, my card reader is malfunctioning. ;)

your right,

Now that i look at the EPC again, there were 2 versions on the 126, the early version you have there is NLA and when replaced requires the new flanged shaft with flange, just like a 6,9 if repaired at a dealiership would get ;)

I can't be sure from your pics but it appears top have only two stripes on the markings on the shaft.

I thought the 6.9 had a special drive shaft shared with the Diesel due to the extra torque and a larger 115mm (vs 100mm)inner joint but I see looking at the workshop manual that the 126 036 also has a 115 mm inner joint.

Axle identification chart

There was up to a certain chassis no left and right handed axle shafts as well with spiral oil return grooves that had to turn in the correct direstion.

If your shafts were in good condition I would be happier with new boots as you don't know how long the 126 ones will take before they develop leaks even if they are the exact equivalent and it's a s%%t of a job to do in-situ.

There is two stripes on those W126 units. I've wrapped them up and packed them away for spares, as they are not even as good as the ones that just came off the 6.9. 8)
I'll be installing the original units back on the 6.9, which are at the Star Shop now for refurbishment.

OTOH, the Bendix calipers off that 500 are compatible, so they will be going on after I refit the trans and rear suspension/final drive (in that order). I have just disassembled the rear calipers off the 6.9, on which the dust boots were almost nonexistent. Here's some pics after polishing the pistons.
I'll be painting these black once I have removed all the grime, as that is the colour that they were on this car.

remember that this diff was from 1989...the service books note that the diff was replaced on this 1984 car in 1989 for some reason...PB probably was doing burnouts at an early age!

They probably kept the original half shafts and replaced the diff only, it was only a few years old at that stage. All the parts are interchangeable. 8)
That is a good diff, although it needs new seals. It's in my car ready to return to you at any stage. ;)

i was 3 years old when that 500 was new

my 1979 6.9 existed for 2 years prior to my birth into this questionable, mercedes distroying world  8)
