4spd -> 5spd conversion

okay, now, before i start, this probably all BS, pure speculation. dont get your hopes up guys haha

but LosCreepers' thread about his 5spd got me thinking....according to the Haynes manual i have, the only difference between the 4 and 5 speed boxes is a section between the main box and the prop shaft connection, present only in 5 spd.

to convert 4 to 5, would be as simple as adding that extra section, and maybe getting a 5 speed shifter assembly, or would it involve more involved fiddling about with the internals?

it is pretty much given that it isnt that simple, but id love to hear everyones opinions. just think of it, a 5 speed AMG haha 8)

Zook I'm guessing you haven't had a replay cause no-one's done it!!!  It might be possible but you'd still need to find the missing bits...

zook,

Very simple conversion IF you can find the correct 5 speed gearbox.  FYI, the ones from 114's and early 107's (280SL or SLC) will work.

A friend in Rio has a 76 280S converted to 5 speed using a 280E box. Oh and don't forget that if you have a 3.69 rear end the car may need a downshift  into 4th when going uphill. I believe 3.92 was used on 5 speed 116's.

Tks,

Joe

Hi Joe, are there any 4 or 5 spd manual gearboxes that can be coupled up to the M117 or are they only suitable for the M110? Maybe one from a W115 or W123 300D or is there too much torque in the M117 for these gearboxes?

shhh guys youre crushing my dreams  ::) ;D

cheers joe! how do you tell which would be compatable with which? a case of looking up part #s or is it more of an across the board thing, ie only those used in specific models rather than a specific box from a specific model?

i seem to remember when i was doing the rear suspension that the diff had a strangly high ratio, quite possibly 3.92.....maybe this is meant to be ;)

*edit* just read through that again.....having to DOWNSHIFT to 4TH. lmao what a luxury!!!

Ken,

350's were available with a 4 speed, however I am not sure the box can take the higher torque of the M117. I wonder if  MB did not offer a manual 450 because of the mechanical limitations on their then current  transmissions or if it was a marketing decision given the more upscale nature of a 450 buyer. I am pretty sure the 5 speed from the M110 probably wouldn't take the abuse too well...

zook, I tried to determine the exact location of the p/n for the 5 speed when LosCreepers was looking for a gearbox but was unable to do so. I can tell you that a 5 speed would be a 717000 model. Ideally you want to make sure the box came from a 114 or 107 280.

Tks,

Joe

Thanks Joe, I suspected that would be the case.

Are you guys talking about the ZF 5 speeds? I am only familiar with the Getrag 5 speeds. I used to have one that I removed from a W123. I decided to not install it (and sold it) because I enjoy not having to shift in my W116, which I view as a total comfort car.

Id suggest a chat to Hollinger about a box for a V8, Even their 6 speed boxes are not enormous dollars and you can spec the box ratio's to suit your final drive ratio...

To my mind it would be worth the 5 or so thousand (Bolt up and drive) just to have people wonder "WTF! Did I just hear that old Merc snatch 6th?"
