450SEL 1977, after more than 10 years in the garage

Hello all.

Recently, I have purchased a 450 SEL (116.033)  from the first hand owner, and it was staying for 10 years in a solid dry garage, but without intermittent engine start-up.
It has only 150000km, mostly done at highway driving Zagreb-Aachen. They have had other city-cars to drive. Car is with perfectly preserved interior.

After first start-up (jet fuel sprayed in cylinders, and turning engine by hand to verify smooth run), I had left it idling to warm-up and changed oil and all filters, and after that engine is running very smooth and silent. Had replaced the fuel injectors as well (new one). Aircon is working, all elec windows as well, cruise control working and central locking operative.

Today compression test is done. Values are more than good (in kP/cm2)
1. 12,4
2. 12,9
3. 12,5
4. 12,5
5. 11,5
6. 11,6
7. 11,5
8. 11,5

Interesting that L/H side (cyl. 5-8) is slightly lower.

Car is running like a traing but there is huge amount of blue smoke when idling, and above idle, but dissapear with higher revs, and it is completely smokelles at 4000+ revs and again appears on revolutions rundown.
I suppose it is due to inlet and outlet valve rubber seals. Car is old and stayed for a long time, am I right? Do you suggest me to change the valve stem seals?
Is there anything else that should be done?

Many thanks.

Vlado

Hallo Vlado,

welcome in the forum. Sounds like an interesting project. Sorry that I do not have experience in your topic. Good luck

yes a prima facie case of valve stem seals having dried out sitting idle for 10 years. there will be many other examples of this as you use the car more but for the moment, concentrate on the valve seals. These can be done with heads in place.............not a job for the feint hearted. .....find a good Merc workshop.

Thanks Randy.  Will do the valve seals first.

I have left over brand new  Fuel Injector SLEEVE & Nozzle Holder KIT + 8 Injectors in good shape. After changing these, the engine runs very smooth and has no problem with hot start any more. Like a brand new car!
