Last weekend I had removed the fuel pump package :

Unfortunately someone in the past has been abusive of things when changing the filter :

THis weekend I stripped and cleaned everything.

cleaning in progress :

The only parts being retained are the brackets, damper and accumulator.

The damper cleaned up well, and the accumulator too cleaned up suprisingly well (well at least cosmetically, externally).

I was a bit concerned about the rust spots visible on the diaphragm seen through one of the ports :

This is after thorough cleaning, so its not loose stuff.  Any thoughts?  I hope this is useable.  The view througg the offset port is good :

The new parts are now on hand :

I removed the fuel tank and found lots more rat poo :

Cleaned up, it looked a bit better :

Then I pulled the strainer and found this : yugh - the nylon gauze was hard with imbedded rust, and when I tried to flex it free, the gauze cracked.

So I looked into the tank with a torch, and found it is exceedingly rusty.  An not just surface rust either - flakes of the stuff.  We are going to need to find another tank.

I see, that strainer certainly does have a lot of flakes in it. When I was working on my 6.9, I wondered what all the commotion was about, regarding fuel tanks. I actually reused that strainer, because all it needed was a quick rinse out.

I certainly know what it's all about now, though. ;)

I'm not sure about the accumulator. I would imagine that loose particulate would be the main concern, as well as the possibility of a torn diaphragm. That early system is quite different, too.

And here is the solution to the fuelling problems :

Aint that a beautiful sight

The tank is back from ultrasonics.  Goodness its clean inside and out - totally bare steel, it looks like a brand new assembly.  This weekend I'll shoot it with Standox etch plus 2k black.

Don't blush - a naked W116 fuel tank :

Injector ports cleaned up :

Insulators pressed in :

And some bling :

Another minor misery transpired yesterday - the 8 injectors each have a little bracket and m6 screw retaining them.  Well on number 7, the threaded hole in the inlet manifold for that screw is stripped out.  It looks like old damage, and it seems the screw was glued in with epoxy or some such.

Anyhow, I decided a helicoil was the solution, and I duly bought this kit :

I thought though that you guys would get a kick out of the text on the label :

The Australian technology worked wonders.  The helicoil went in a treat, and the problems are solved.  Now all the injectors are properly installed.

Wouldn't have worried, it's the only the label and bag that's a "Product of Australia"

Not even that, the company that designed it would of been based in Australia, none of the manufacturing of it would of been done here at all.

Here we have the damper that sits next to FD.  I'm kicking myself for not sending it in to ultrasonics with the injection lines.  WHat's inside here?  Based on spraying carb cleaner in one port or the other, I'm inclinded to think there is some sort of baffling.  Or maybe this ones blocked?  I assume there is also some sort of ?rubber? diaphagm separating the fuel side from the vac side.  THe vac side tests fine - no leaks.
