Hi all, Trevor from Tenterfield NSW Australia, my 1974 280se has a very high idle speed and i don't know how to reduce it to the correct idle speed, any suggestions? Plus as the engine warms up the idle speed increases! What should i look at to fix this.
Thank you
Trevor
What's the fuel system of the car (K-jetronic or something else)?

Hi Trevor, what idle speed is the tachometer showing. I find that in park the idle speed and after a cold start the the auto choke stays on. On my 280sel It's only when I've driven a few k's does the idle speed drop from as high as 2000rpm to about 600rpm after being fully warmed up. It's pretty normal for them to stay on high idle after a cold start. Mine Is a kJet fuel infection system
ok.it's a D jetronic. We know that because of its age.
so..D jetronic experts...step up plz?! ;D
Being D-jetronic could mean only a handful of things......bad idle control valve, leaky intake manifold/injector seals, ignition timing too far advanced, vacuum lines disconnected, bad vacuum box on side of distributor, or any combination of the aforementioned. There is no "tip" or "trick" or "magic screw" to turn that'll magically fix everything. After you have confirmed that the ignition timing, ignition point dwell, and valve lash clearances are in check then and only then can you proceed further to investigate other issues. Otherwise, you'll chase your tail.
