Hi guys,

So my 1980 280 SEL needs a new transmission and I found one that comes from a w116 (its 280 SE or SEL) but the numbers on it are slightly different from the numbers on my original transmission.

The numbers on mine are:
12112 f2
R1152714101
46

The numbers on the other one are:
12112 f3
R1152714101
46

So I'm wondering if I can use the other one even though one number is different.

Any help/suggestions are welcome.

Thanks guys.

I am bumping this old post. Maybe someone has an answer to this now?

On the US passenger side of the transmission the part number is punched in on the case above the pan followed by the serial number as per the data card. You can Google the 116 part number and that should tell you the type of transmission it has. From my Tech manual looks like the 280 should have 722.112 trans with type designation W4B 025.

Here is a handy-dandy lookup sheet for cross reference to check your specific model's transmission, found this online and not sure if 100% correct in all instances:

No doubt the original poster has probably sorted out his issues by now, but those numbers he's posted are just the main housing casting numbers no doubt. I would say he has the same transmission.

There are minor differences between early and late versions though.

Is there any interchange info available?  Looks like there is a little overlap in that chart and I'm wondering what will physically interchange with what.  I can find transmissions for 240/300Ds and 300SDs locally but 280SEs are pretty thin on the ground.

Can't supply any technical information but I can talk about my experience some 15  years ago.
Took my 1975  year (280se) - D  jet for transmission issues to a long time transmission workshop specialist.
He wasn't a Mercedes man but had done many repair and service jobs for me and my father before me.
He diagnosed the problem as a hairline fracture of part of the casing. (Never to this day did we work out what caused it. Metal fatigue maybe?)
Anyway we agreed a good 2nd hand unit suitably serviced would be the most cost efficient answer.
He found such a unit, only to call back and say it wasn't entirely appropriate. His investigation had found it was off a later 116 (K jet?) and wouldn't do the job. Another wait of a few days turned up the unit currently fitted and still working trouble free.
Hope this helps..
Suffice to say I know nothing about 116 transmissions.
