Title: 280 SE no running on petrol
Post by: Bobe on 24 March 2022, 01:16 PM
Hi There,

I bought a 280SE in the Netherlands last week and after a full service at a renowned Classic MB specialist near Amsterdam and replacement of all injectors, I drove it back home. The car was fitted with a LGP installation and the previous driver ran the car exclusively on LPG for many years. However, in my view the only proper fuel for this car is petrol, "whatever it takes".

I drove it therefore on petrol and it worked fantastically well... for 400 kms, after which it started to "cough" in a traffic jam and stalled, not to be started on petrol again - I finished the trip on LPG. When I crank the starter even for a short while, nothing happens as if fuel was definitely not coming in the cylinders, which is probably the case

I think (hope) it might not be the injection pump as it ran perfectly well before stalling, but I rather suspect the old fuel in the tank, and its dirt, having jammed the fuel pump and/or the filter. What would you suggest as a test to identify the source of the issue and the remedy. Or should I change all three parts, pump  filer and the small fuel container after the filter ? Thanks for your advice.

If the car hasn't run on petrol for years, the tank and fuel system are guaranteed to be a total mess.

Best way forward would be to flush the tank, replace the fuel pump and filter, and at least flush and blow-through all fuel lines.

this often happens that the petrol system got neglected becouse of only driving on LPG
you could do a check for how much dirt or rust there is in the tank by looking in your gastank through the hole of the fuel sender unit when you take it out , this is not much work , and the gastank also has an filter by the way

Thank you for the advice. I'll start with the fuel strainer inside the tank (i guess it is accessible from underneath the car without the need to remove the fuel tank?) and will change the damper, fuel pump and filter. The cost is reasonable for all parts will be less than €350. Cheers!

Iff i am correct you need an special tool for the fuel strainer to do that from underneath the car

It is a 46 mm socket it seems. I've seen since videos of dismantling the fuel pump and filter where the strainer was clearly visible fom underneath. The concern is whether there will be enough space for the soocket. I'll order the parts and will see how it goes.

Thanks all !
