Title: 1980 300SD w116 Evaporator Replacement
Post by: jtwoods4 on 06 August 2019, 04:34 PM
Can someone direct me to instructions or a post on the forum for how to remove and replace the AC Evaporator? Does the entire dash have to come out or can it be accessed from behind the glove box?

I believe you only need to remove the center console and glove box liner, and the dashboard can stay in place. The heater box is disconnected from everywhere and then slid out from underneath the dashboard. This thread may be of some help: https://forum.w116.org/mechanicals/acc-overhaul-heater-box-evaporator-removal/ (https://forum.w116.org/mechanicals/acc-overhaul-heater-box-evaporator-removal/)

It's covered in the factory service manual, as well. There is an online manual available on this site somewhere, but last I checked the security certificate was invalid.

You're right!!  Ferreting into the air handling box and evap is one revolting job. The word "only" should never be used when entering this arena. I do believe you can tackle it without pulling all the dash out...seats...centre console..all lower underdash panels..glovebox..centre fascia..radio etc etc.
spaghetti junction. I have some photos some where of when I did this job and it is a reminder to get rid of the car before venturing back in!

Of course it's all relative. you might be young and fit with time to burn with ideal facilities...... lol!!!
