Recently got a quote on rebuilt axles from CVJ axles in Denver, CO which seems to be fairly reasonable. Anyone have any experience in dealing with this company before?

Also, is there anything else I should plan to change while I'm replacing the axles?

I plan on taking mine down to CVJ sometime soon.  they seem to be very good.

You must also replace the special washer that goes on the bolt that holds the end of axle to the hub.  It's a one time use washer. look up the correct torque it's not that high. If you need it let me know I will look it up.

As always look for anything rubber that may need replacing.  Also how old are your shock absorbers?

If you have a LSD make sure to get the correct fluid.

Thanks, not sure I have a lsd in mine. I'm new to Mercedes. The 300sd only has 156k on it and the shocks seem good but guess I may as well look at replacing them while I'm down there. All this said, how difficult is replacing the axles? I've rebuilt the front end and axles on an old land cruiser before but this seems a little more in depth than that

They are a bit tight to get out. Others have discussed this before on various forums, but in short, disconnect the rear shocks so you can lower the A arm further down to get more room.  You have to force the end of the axle toward the center of car thru the carrier to get it out.

They briefly show how here https://handbook.w116.org/Chassis/35-130.pdf

but they use their giant MB special tool that doesnt exist anymore.

If you have not found it already, this site has the complete repair manual online in the "Library".

Search w116 rear axle removal
Process is the very similar for w123 and w126

There will be a few links and a how to that pop up from peachparts. You will need to remove the sway bar link and one end of the shock absorber to let the rear control arm drop down just enough to get the axle out.

Depending how intensive you want to go, you could look at replacing the differnetial seals since your 6 bolts away. Differnetial mount is simple at this point as well.

You can drop the differnetial and the axles in one shot. Without messing with the shocks or sway bars. About a 3.5 hour job without a lift.

Tapping the axles out with a wood doll rod  is ideal
