Title: 1974 450SEL Not running right
Post by: nostat on 30 May 2013, 10:12 AM
When I brought my 450 out of winter storage I took it for a spin and everything ran fine. The next day I was on my way to work and when it was warmed up it began to spit and back fire with black smoke out the exhaust. I put 10gal. of fresh gas in and a bottle of injector cleaner (sta-bil was added before storage). I took it out for a spin and after it warmed up  it began to spit and backfire again but after about a mile it started running fine. I took it on a few short errands and everything worked fine but today on my way to work it it started up again. I can't wait till its time to go home and see which 450 I
get. Any ideas as to what is going on would be helpful. Thanks

Have you replaced anything yet?  I'd look at plugs first.  How old is the fuel?  Today it only lasts about 3 months before it goes off

Yeah, start with ignition. Lots of fuel is not being ignited.
