Wood door cards would be borderline gaudy, which would interfere with Mercedes's minimalistic approach to design, so no.  It definitely wasn't an option.  Remember that the W116 designing process was all about "what's the least we can get away with in cosmetics, and how inexpensive can it be done"?  Hence, the three little pieces of wood just on the dash on the early models.  When the complaints of the cars being too "lack luster" got too overwhelming is when they started putting more wood back in the interiors..in particular on the ash tray, climate control, and shift gate surround.
