Just wondering if anyone has seen one of these- a wood piece for where the hazard light / gear shifter bits sits for a w116 with manual winding windows. All the ones ive seen have got holes drilled for window switches. If I cant find one could i try to make one myself by using a tin or hard plastic template and getting a cabinet maker to veneer it?

Like the one in my 300SD?

They seem to come up on ebay on odd occasions.  Do you have one with the other holes in it?  If originality didn't bother you it'd be easy to cover one with vinyl or leather of your choice.  Maybe even something carbon fibre looking...

GF,

That's a rare item you're after. I'd do as you suggest and get any old one, redoing the veneer as needed.

Thats the one squiggle dog!So they do exist! My cars only got the wood trim across the dashboard, the rest- ash tray ect is plastic. The only holes it would need extra would be for a fader dial for the stereo.

They made these in vinyl, also. In fact, I've also got one in black vinyl. If you bring one with holes in it to a woodworker, he might be able to use it as a template to make a new one without holes. Here's one for sale that's been restored, though it has a fader knob hole which mine doesn't: http://cgi.ebay.com/Zebrano-Schalthebelumrandung-Mercedes-Benz-W116-W-116-/350282953679?pt=Autoteile_Zubeh%C3%B6r&hash=item518e7db3cf

Very odd, indeed. However, if you can find another one with or without holes in it that you don't need, it can be re veneered and refinished leaving only the holes you need and/or want.  Do any of you know Drew Tibcken?  He refinishes Mercedes wood for a living, and is exceptionally good at what he does.  Modifications are one of his specialties.  The name of his business is Heritage Woodworks.  He has a web site, too, and his number is 828-321-3523.

Or, you can try to see if this is still available through the dealer.  The part number is 116-680-96-07-8273.  The last four digits signify that it is a zebrano wood, and is needed for the part to come up on MBNA's Net Star whether the part is NLA or not.  Then there is also the chance that the number won't even come up as a good number if it has been NLA for over a year.  Hope this helps. :-)

I know of a '80/'81 280 S A/T parts car nearby with manual windows - and with the prized wood around the gear lever - intact.
It will need refinishing, but it is the real thing.
I'll be going past there again today.
Any interest?

I would get it and if no one on the forums wants it, put it on eBay.

I checked it out and it is cracked to the point where the entire top layer is peeling off.
Is it still salvageable?
What do these fetch on the mkt if in good nic?

Squiggle Dog

I don't know anything about refinishing them. I think I paid $80 for mine, plus shipping from Germany. There's one for over $200 on eBay Germany that was restored (see link above).
