Windshield seal nightmare

Took the car to a glass shop. Been in business 60 years. Specialize in older cars, blah blah blah. Gave them a brand new OEM seal..

Annnddd this is what I got back.

They got the glass inside the seal but actually getting the trim and the seal to fit in the car gave them fits. They threw in the towel and gave me the car back. With everything torn apart. So now I'm scrambling to get find a glass shop that knows what they are doing.

Any tips?

I keep meaning to get the video together from where I replaced front and rear glass.
In a nutshell:
Seal is applied to glass
Trim is roped into seal UNDER lip
Windshield is roped into place
If this order is followed, the entire job won't take more than a couple of hours.

PM me an address and I'll send you the (unedited) video.

Been there, done that.

Here is where they went wrong:

1. They didn't put the trim in before installing the rubber (it will never go in once the seal is installed).

2. They didn't clean out the lip where the seal rests surgically clean and free of chunks and sealant.

3. They didn't use the rope method as polymathman stated. Laminated cable works great, too (it's what I use).

And this is also why vintage MB owners end up paying for a job twice.  I do hate hearing/seeing this, and I always feel guilty about having to charge the customer to do the job again.  Especially when my rate is so much higher than the first shop. Though, It's rather baffling to me.....if they've been in business for all these years, then they should know the order of operations whether it's for a W116 or some other older domestic or import.  I always say that there is a reason the other shop down the lane charges less, and here before you is one of those reasons. :/

Talked with Harv today, not too far from me. Might be able to help.

A while back I installed both front and rear windshields, and as there had been much talk on this forum, I made a video. Until today, I never got around to doing much about it. But I figured I'd help Harv out and threw it together.

It's really rough, but the main points come through - skip the "God Bless America" singing.
Anyway, I would appreciate suggestion on things I missed, or tricks unseen.

LOL!

This really isn't even a hard job. I can do it myself easily enough with nothing but a hard plastic spatula. Sorry for your misfortune... I hope they paid you for that nonsense!

Every time I have gotten a windshield from a junk yard, and bring it up to the counter to pay for it with the seal still on it to protect the edges, they ask me how I got it out without breaking it, I guess most people cut the seal?

I did break a perfect windshield once, being too hasty. Won't do that again!

P.S. Love the ivory - is that a 300SD? I have one (my first W116) but sadly it got hit by a semi. :/ It's windshield is broken from when my seatbeltless roomate's head hit the glass (fortunately no injury to him).

Amazing. I put it on a USB and I'm taking it up to the glass place.

Evidently DropBox only lets you see the first of it. You have to sign up to download the whole thing. DropBox isn't bad though, and the sign up is free.
