From what I have heard it is a notoriously difficult job on a 116 and not made easier by the fact that the non-factory seal is missing some of the depth necessary to hold the trim securely.

The guy who did mine had a bit of trouble with fitting the trim to the OEM seal until he phoned around and was told the outside edge of the trim needs to tuck under the moulded lip of the seal. Don't know if new OEM seals are moulded a bit differently or I just got one from a bad batch.  Or should the trim have been under the lip in the first place.

I'm pretty sure the trim should be under the lip... both seals on my 450 were replaced relatively recently and that is how the trim has been installed. Fitment on that car is outstanding, but it wasn't done in my ownership.

The ancient, cracked seals on the 6.9 didn't have much of a lip, but that's probably no indication.

Well, I take back what I said about the Febi seal. I managed to successfully fit the windscreen yesterday, using the rope method.

The only problem was that I couldn't fit the chrome trim beforehand, as per the manual instructions, and it seems to be impossible with the seal installed. I don't know that it's possible to be honest.

I only used mastic (not silicone) on the sides, and I'll inject it all the way round now that it's installed.

It just doesn't want to fit, in the corners. Then there is the dreaded lip.

Oh well, at least I now have a windscreen(shield). ;)

Indeed. I just didn't know what I was doing the first time round. BTW, I was half asleep when I posted the above. The corners not fitting refers to the chrome trim.

I'll look into that shortly.

So now you have a windscreen, without trim - is this progress?  ;)

Hmmm, I wouldn't call it progress now, as it needs to come out again to fit the anodized trim. ;)

I actually started to remove it and cracked it, so a new one is now mandatory. I wasn't too concerned though, as it was only mean't to be a practice fit. They are very easy to crack if you don't destroy the seal upon removal.

What's the "dreaded lip"?

Is it the lip that now goes over the trim?

This is exactly what same as what the guy who did mine experienced.

Trim wouldn't stay in on the corners until he tucked it under the lip.

That's correct. There's just not a chance of the trim remaining in the rubber, even when the lip is over the trim. This is because the seal is compressed and unable to take the tongue of the trim piece.

I'll experiment with it a bit more tomorrow.

this job sounds like a complete pain in the backside.

I should be receiving the proper seal this week, then I will order some glass. I was quoted $190 AUD for a 116 windscreen from Novus. It seems pretty cheap, and I don't know why I didn't do it before (actually yes I do, I would've broken it!).

Then it's time to attempt the rear.

Here's the latest update:

The genuine seal profile. It is actually quite different to the Febi part;

The sealant... it's definitely a more appropriate product now; ;)

Glass & "sealing frame";

Glass close-up. Notice the border;

"Sealing frame" in place. The fit is perfect, unlike before;

And from afar...

I should hope that this is as good as it seems. Next step is to fit the ornamental frame and the lubricated rope. This will be interesting indeed. For now I'm calling it a day, however.

Hi TJ after reading about your troubles with the windscreen seal i have decided to bite the bullet and buy genuine door boot and windscreen rubbers  for when i paint my 6.9 :)

TJ, how much did the proper seal cost and what brand was it?  I just remember reading somewhere someone being supplied with "the proper seal" thru a dealer only to find it was much like your Febi seal.

Also, what  kind of rope are you using and how thick?

I've been tempted to buy an ebay special for $99 for the track car because it'll be experimental and it doesn't matter too much if I get it wrong, but good if it does work.  The 350 has needed a new screen and would prefer to get the right seal but not sure what is the right brand.
