I agree that dyed ones can be rougher to touch and I don't really know why....

I know why, Its because they need to strip more of the lanolin from the fleece to get the dye to "Take" which removes a lot of the softness from the fleece, Lanolin is of course the natural conditioner that gives sheep and lambskin its protection and softness, it is also why my hands are so damned soft lol

Oh BTW, washing your skins with Wool Wash will often soften dyed fleece.

I heard red tribble is the rarest.

Ahhhh; makes sense!  So do you think it'd be ok to use a little Woolwash to clean some seatbelts??

Works well on seatbelts mate, makes em smell nicer too lol.

If they are mouldy use some clove oil to wipe em down as its a powerful fungicide and then wash the belts.

Or wash them in 10% spirit vinegar, which smells horrible on the job but leaves no smell afterwards and is also a very strong disinfectant/fungicide. Plus it's cheap as chips.

BARGAIN!

Probably a clearance item

Something else to remember:  A dark dye is more likely to fade in the sun and you can find the covers end up being muti-coloured!  Mine were supposed to be black and now the exposed bits are largely blue....   Then again it may've been just a crap job.  >:(

Nah thats about right Mark, Black usually isnt actually black pigment.

Its either Brown or Blue and it has something to do with colour fast properties.

Casey

There aren't really any good black pigments besides carbon black, which is what they use in tires and paints, but as that's a powder I dunno if it's usable in dyes.  Why not just use skins from black sheep though?

Because there's no such thing as black sheep, just very very dark brown ones.

Pardon my last minute jump in but if you are looking for quality sheepskins located in the US?
If so try   comfysheep.com       (No offence to my mates down under)
They offer outstanding producets from generic fit to custom taylored and the prices are reasonable.
They also offer a nice burgandy color (think wine)
Had a set of skins from them and plan to get another set down the road.
Hope this helps.
