Just wondering, as I've lost a couple this year and am thinking of making a less removable version involving a bolt and some welding.

Safer for pedestrians / cyclists maybe ?

scraf,
i think u have hit the nail on the head. not only is it safer for anyone who strikes it.
also, if the thing were rigid it would snap quite easy everytime it got knocked and if youve ever come across a snapped one - youll know they are sharp as hell!!

Also cheaper just to replace the ornament than it is to replace/repair a bent grill or bonnet depending on the model.

I had one wrenched off a 124 E280 years ago at night and in the dull light I thought they had damaged the bonnet paint but when I got up in the morning I saw it was copious amounts of blood where the big spring had lacerated the end of a finger tip.

I was still smiling and humming when I paid the $48 the next day and always thought that his finger hurt much more for much longer than the small fee charged for the part.
