Which Colour for W116 ?????

I just wish I could get it running right ! This is a bit off topic, but we still can't work out if it is fuel or electrical. Low revs i.e. normal driving is fine, but as soon as you give it a bit more than normal, it starts bucking like a bronco. It also cuts out going around roundabouts sometimes, which is pretty scary considering you lose steering and brakes ! Everything has been checked fuel wise from the tank to the injectors, including pressure. Plugs, points, leads, dizzy cap, rotor, fuel filter, accumulator, and warm-up regulator have either been replaced or reconditioned. Someone mentioned that the fuel return line could be blocked, so that is something else to check. The problem is that you cannot get to it without opening up the tank, and I have already had that cleaned, but if there is rust in the"hump" inside the fuel tank that operates like a small reservoir, and it is not filling up because it is blocked, that MIGHT be the cause, or at least part of. One solution is to clean it with a broken speedo cable attached to an electric drill, but there is not a great deal of room under there, so the tank might need to come out again to do that. It will all resolve itself in time ! It does rev VERY well though. It will climb to 5700 rpm much faster than most other 6.9's I know, and would seem to be able to rev out to 6,000 without too much trouble. I don't have the rotor in it at the moment that has the rev limiter on it as the new one doesn't have it, and I believe they are no longer available from Bosch.

Photobucket wouldn't work last time I was clicking on it.  But now, :o nice cars Craig!!  Inca Rot has gotta be one of the rarest colours.  Tomi's 450 is inca rot and was the only one I had seen pics of.  Even the German site that has got examples of colour codes, trim codes etc, hasn't got an example of inca rot.

You've also got the original towbar.  Perhaps the second one I've seen apart from Styria's.  Probably rarer then inca rot.  Certainly a very interesting 6.9.  Feel free to share more about what you've done to it etc.

I was also going to say the rev limiter rotors are available as I had seen them on US parts sites not long ago when I bought some gear, a quick check now and it's listed as a closeout item or special order. :-[  They also say the straight type can be used as a replacement.  Wish I bought one or more now.

I replied to this post, but it seems to have gone astray ! This colour was only available for the 1980 production year. It's not a colour I would have chosen at the showroom I think, but it does grow on you, and the likelihood of seeing another on the road is probably pretty low. Most of thr paint is pretty good, but the boot lid needs to be repainted because of fading - either from the sun, or a poorly done repair. I think the former is most likely as there is no evidence of any panel work anywhere. Because the car had been sitting for 4 years before I bought it, the biggest problems I had were in getting rid of the sap from gum trees on the paint, removing water from the fuel tank and ancilliaries, and ants and dog hair from the interior and upholstery. The former owner had replaced the accumulators before being laid up, so there are no suspension problems.

The tow bar is an original German unit - you see them everywhere in Europe. This was quite an expensive option at DM 531.10 - roughly the same in A$ at the time. For those that are interested, the list price was DM 81, 247 and the options that it has cost as follows:

Alloys DM 1169.55
Becker Mexico cassette   DM 1576.35
Antenna DM 333.35
Velour  DM 1559.40
Badge removal   No charge

Bringing the total price to DM 86,416.75

I once saw a 350SEL (believed the only one in South Africa) in that self same silver brown colour.  In person (metal) it looked fantastic.  I am also considering it for my 280SE.  I think it would work with my black interior.

Ryan

Ryan, there is a 350SEL with manual transmission here in Cape Town. It is a Silver Blue, but it is in poor condition and RHD. Now that is super rare. Pity they could not look after it a bit better.

Greg,

That 350SEL would not perchance be for sale?  Or could they be persuaded its for sale?  I would prefer auto, but I have realised that my overriding requirement is that I want an SEL, not an SE.  Second priority is sunroof.  BEyond that I'm not too fussy.  I will happily take on a basket case - that would give me huge enjoyment.

Do any of you South African guys know Graham Van Heerden from Cape Town? He only has one W116 that I know of, but he has an impressive collection of Mercedes. He are some details for him:-

I visited him a couple of years ago, and he is a very hospitable person. I think he is currently President of the MB club in Cape Town.

AMG69

Craig, hav eyou checked out the Ignition module (silver box on the guard on RHS in picture).  This casued my 6.9 to cut out going around corners last week.
sigh....sitting back contemplating the next purchase..!

CraigS

I was about to buy one off eBay a couple of weeks ago, until they pulled the ad at the last minute. Yes, that is on the list to change. The wires are all tight, and I'm not sure if there is any way to test these. The module I am looking for is 000 545 76 32 and/or 000 545 76 32 88 (don't know why this last one has an extra 88 at the end, but that is from the Bosch catalogue, and doesn't provide a reference to chassis numbers). If anyone has a spare one, I would be interested !

Craig - I know him very well. I serve on the Mercedes Club committee with him. He has a very nice 350SE at the moment with a genuine 60 000km. The car is brand new!!
