Hi everyone,
Today came across a chap who has a very unusual set of wheels on his Benz
They look like bundt copies but they have 225/55x390 Tyres on them?
This guy bought the car with them on it and was told they were standard.
Now three years later he cannot find any replacement tyres to fit. He has                      attempted to fit 15" tyres to no avail. Has anyone heard of these  before?
     Regards Robert.

Yep, those are metric tires, very expensive. BMW fitted those as standard to the original 6 series cars. This is why you now see so many 6 and 7 series cars with aftermarket wheels.

So basically they are srap metal, as they need refinishing anyway. Thanks.
I will recomend he buys a set of genuine mercedes Bundts.

I wont call them scrap, you just need to find Metric tires which can be very expensive in the US.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but are you sure the 390 tyres currently fitted are actually appropriate for the rims?  There was a discussion on this topic (TRX tyres) on benzworld a couple of months ago.  Some of the posters seemed adamant that metric Bundts dont exist.  What I'm saying is that these *may* be 15" bundts that have been fitted with TRX tyres (incorrectly).  I may be wrong, but perhaps you have a chance to score some 15" bundts?  Check the data on the inside of the rims.

I had another look at the wheels they had 180x390H2 stamped on them and ( ET 30 )
Anyway I supplied him a set of genuine 6.1/2x14H2 Bundts that he has fitted the correct tyres 205/70x14 for his 450SLC . It was the best SLC I have seen to date, in light blue and cream leather interior.

BAR

I have had a similar experience in the UK and here with Citroen CX's using the Michellin TRX [run flat] tyres.

The tyres were great, but what a shock when it came to buying new rubber.

Best bet is to go and replace the rims and put 'standard' wheel/tyre combination back on the road: after all the W116's have space in the boot for a full sized spare tyre [unlike many modern cars that put the can of Finnelec in the glove box and offer a prayer card as well].

If you need.. I have a spare set of 4 x 15" Bundts with Dunlop rubber fitted - balanced and ready to run.
