Title: Wheel Well Undercoating
Post by: 90077merc on 22 October 2021, 12:45 AM
I notice not all w116s have undercoating on the wheel wells. Instead some have paint that looks to match the body color and it's really pretty. Can you just media blast off this undercoating?

All W116 cars left the factory with body shutz in the wheel wells.  The only exception may be if the car was sent to Asia or South Africa partially assembled.  But even then the body shutz was usually present unlike cars shipped to Australia in the early 60's where body shutz was not applied.

Body shutz that Mercedes used on the W116 was a water based PVC material.  Mercedes liked to call it "plasticised undercoating", and often claimed that 24-30 pounds if it was applied to each car.  This body shutz is still available from Mercedes.  Part number 001-986-46-10.  It comes in an 800 ML metal can that an undercoating spray gun screws on to.  Air pressure must be regulated to something like 40-40psi.  It says the exact pressure on the can.

The body shutz in the wheel wells were always painted body color.  If they're black/dark then it means someone has tried to play hero by spaying on additional undercoating or painted them black because they don't know any better.  Often times a good scrubbing with soap and water will make them look new again, but this is assuming the wheel wells haven't been compromised with paint or additional undercoating.  And yes, the body shutz can be removed by various methods.  However, even with paint applied to the bare metal you set yourself up for massive rust issues in due time.  This material was applied for very good reason, and removing it is asking for trouble.

What are you trying to accomplish with removal? Your better off grinding off just the loose areas and then respraying. 3m makes a yellowish one like original color. The mb one is gray. Both are not cheap. .

MB sends Teroson.  The can on right is brush-able vs spray able.   The both are water based so it shrinks a lot after applying. Not very effective IMHO.

I cant find any Teroson available anywhere either right now. MB doesnt show available either.

This is the 3M I have used, but seems not available anymore - like everything else these days......Glad I have about 4-5 cans on m shelf.  :)

I've used it on my W124 and can recommend it.

I am trying to clean and lighten up the wheel wells, not necessarily eliminate the undercoating.

It's available from an online store. Looks similar to the painted stuff on the rear lower quarter panel.
