What are these rims?

So I was trawling eBay today and found this 6.9 with these newer rims that look quite appropriate to the W116 body IMHO:

Anybody recognize them?

No seen those but there must be a wide spacer as they are not deep dish like most wheels that fit W116 offsets. If you see some of my old pics you can see that my 6.9 runs 16' rims with 8' front and 9' rear. The front were not fitting correctly and needed a 3mm spacer.

Ahh good point. Spacers kind of scare me, and I do generally prefer the deep dish look. I really like the appearance of these rims on the car though - really brings out the chrome accents of the car.

Not bad, but still hmmmm.

I have been wondering how the E550 series wheels would look on the W116.
I do preffer the elegant look, instead of the sportier AMG look on these big 116's

Hi Casey

I think these may be genuine MB alloys.  The five little holes between the wheel nut lugs has something to do with balancing the wheel on the car (Jo may be able to shed some light here, and I think this feature is unique to MB alloys).  Try this link to Alloy Wheels Direct - genuine 17" Mercedes Markab alloys to fit a w211 E class saloon.

I am quite partial to the Ankaa alloys that I have seen on a cyprus green w116 on this forum.  The diamond polish finish also accents the chrome on 116's.

BTW you can also buy genuine 15" Bundts from them too!

Found the picture here in our forum.  The car belongs to W116 heaven, and was posted on 01/02/2009.  I wonder if he is still about, and if W116 heaven can tell us if these needed spacers or not?

Indeed those do look the same.  I think for 8.5" the correct offset for a W116 would be ET5 (somebody please correct me if I'm mistaken), and these are ET38, meaning you'd need a huge 33mm spacer. :/

To get proper zero-offset steering, and predictable handling on a W116 you require ET30, regardless of the rim width or diameter.  Due to fouling with tie rods etc, if one uses wider rims, it is usually necessary to go to a smaller offset just to make the rim fit, but it is not ideal.

At one stage I used 8Jx16et34 R129 rims on my 280SE W116.  I had to install 3mm spacers, bringing the effective offset to ET31 (ie close to the original ET30) for clearance reasons.

I was running Lorinser rims on the one 6.9 at one stage.  The fronts were 8Jx16et21, and the rears were 10Jx16et0.  They fit like that, but the handling was crappy with tramlining problems in the front.  These particular Lorinsers are designed so that one can mill the centre boss down on the inside, to increase the ET value.  I will be machining the fronts down to about et27 to improve handling.

That's surprising. My exact rims are 8Jx16et25 with 3mm spacer and 9Jx16et20 without spacers. The ride, compared to 14'' bundtcakes was transformed. Suddently I am gliding over pot holes. Steering seems more accurate too. Probably down to much more modern rubber. Can't say I am experiencing any tramlining. One added benefit is much improved stopping distances especially in slippery conditions. I am more confident driving on ice and snow.

Adam, rear rim ET won't affect steering.  I found that having a lower ET at the rear seemed to improve grip and reduce body roll (Well at least thats how it felt when driving).

At the front, the more the ET differs from 30, the more the handling will be altered.  If you have rims that are ET25, and fit 3mm spacers, that creates and effective ET of 22.

You will be just fine with this if your steering and suspension are in good condition.  WIth worn bushes, the car becomes a lot less tolerant.

oversize

AMG wheels (Ronal) had an offset of e11; the same as my Centras.  I seriously doubt they'd fit anything that would make the cars handle worse....

However, I would advise against using wheels with an offset above e30.  They'll rub on the inner guards at the back or on the upper ball joint at the front.  And using spacers is plain dangerous!   :o :o
