Title: W116 sticker quest
Post by: floyd111 on 18 March 2016, 09:22 PM
For those who missed the interlude:
-Get the exact size in MM, color, sticker-material used, part number, location, chassis/engine application of each sticker on the W116
-reproduce all that are NLA,  in high quality, waterproof.

I selected a great deal of stickers/samples already
Rumb created a file online that can be worked by everyone, who may have data to add:
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=FDED54DD16F83D04!4684&authkey=!ABwJyqd8viviuZ4&ithint=file%2cxlsx

Rumb, is it possible to paste photos in that file?
It would be more user friendly that way, rather than post url-links

I would also suggest we go about this systematically, one by one.
I have selected 18 stickers that have a proven part number, but need all other additional data still
I have 40 stickers that have no data yet

I will each time post 2 stickers, and ask for you guys to add

location (photo please!)                :
chassis/engine number applicable  :
NLA/available                               :

At the same time Rumb may work the data in his Excel
Each time we have a full form of an NLA item, I will give the go ahead to do a reproduction.

Shall we start?

Use this link it has the pictures

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=FDED54DD16F83D04!4691&authkey=!AEl1BA6Qsv1LK4g&ithint=file%2cxls

yellow highlighted are ones I think we need, because 1. they are not available somewhere else either MB or other suppliers, and 2. have a usage on W116 chassis.

If you have information on where on the car any other labels goes, let me know and I will verify and add to the list.

I looked at all the images stan has posted so far and weeded out  many of them as not being on W116.

I will update the table from comments here.

Post by: UTn_boy on 20 March 2016, 12:30 AM
RUMB, the 108-835-00-88 was, in fact, used on the W116, but only on the early models.  Unfortunately, there is no information as to when they stopped using this particular decal.  However, I have noticed over the years that D-Jet powered W116 cars all have the 108-835-00-88, but most of the K-Jet and later have the later sticker that mounts on the core support at the top of the radiator next to the hood latch assembly.  I'm not certain of the part number for the later sticker.  The early sticker was affixed to the A/C compressor manifold behind the power steering pump.

If the W116 is an early M-110 powered model, they used the 108-835-00-88 as well, and was affixed to the service valve on the low side of the York Compressor.  I've also seen the same label affixed tot he top of the compressor, as well.  Again, there is no consistency as to when/why about the different location of the label.

Below are some pictures of more decals and color legends that may or may not help.  I have not checked the availability of them.

108 835 0088 (together with 123 835 0088) was used at least until 1977 - below a picture of a 1977-car.
Also on a W107 from 1978 - and on W108-cars.

On the w116 they were used not later than 12/1978: then (or earlier) both were replaced by 123 835 0188.

I have reproduced both stickers for the early cars, if interested just pm me. The late sticker (123 835 0188) will
be available in short time.

The V8-cars with K-Jet (M116 and M117) do have the stickers 115 584 3621 (2x) and 117 584 3221 on the valve covers.
I can deliver a reproduction of 117 584 3221 and in near future also a reproduction of 115 584 3621 (2 needed per car).

According to my dealer sources, 3221 was replaced by 2121 some years ago, and was originally used on early model W126 V8s.
The 3221 however is the one that all W116 V8s (at least euro spec) would have had from factory.

That's the only one you can get at the dealer:

Hi Ptashek,
typo? 3221 should be the sticker that the W116-V8s had from factory.

Update on my reproductions:
The stickers A123 835 00 88, A108 835 00 88 and A117 584 32 21 are already available from me (see above).

As announced the valve-sticker A115 584 36 21 will be available (approx) April, 1st.

I can also offer the correct sticker for the brake booster.
It is not very easy to reproduce them as the sticker includes the date the booster was made
and other variable dates.
Examples:
3.6157-0310.4 (with datecode 76-5) is the sticker of my W116 350SE (the car was delivered in june 1976),
the second sticker (with datecode 78-7) is from my 6.9 (the car was delivered dec.1978).
What I can offer: if you send me a photo (or the text) of your sticker until march, 28th I will reproduce
a sticker exactly as you want it.
If your sticker doesn't exist anymore then select from my 2 photos and choose a date 1-2 months before
your car was built (hint: my 350SE is without ABS, the 6.9 is with ABS).
Second thing to choose from:
Looking at the photos you will see that the original text is not printed horizontally but at an angle!
So let me know if you want to have the sticker with a light angle, or horizontally.

And I can offer the late sticker for the air conditioning (A123 835 01 88) soon.

Both (Brake-booster-sticker and AC-Sticker) will be available in 3-4weeks time from now.

If you are interested - just send me a PM.

Thomas

Update 2:
I will also have the M100-Sticker available in 4 weeks time.
It sits on the brake booster (in my 6.9).

Just let me know.

Hello Stan,

ok - just choose from the stickers I offer ;-)

@all
Is there a need that I reproduce this brake fluid sticker as well (sits on top of the brake booster)?
A few question arise:
- which years to print on it?
From 1980? From 2016? Also from 2020 for future use?
- This one on the photo is incomplete (lower right corner with the part number is missing) and distorted.
Anyone has a good photo that is taken vertically from above?
- excact size?

Thanks,
Thomas

My opinion might be controversial, but I would actually not reproduce any service related stickers.
Why help the dishonest people out there in the big bad world faking an "OEM" service record?

... a service sticker starting with "2016" should be easyly recognized as a later reproduction.
I think most buyers would not rely on such a sticker in conjunction with a missing "wartungsheft" (so no name of the guy who did the service
is available). No prob in my eyes.

I was hoping for a vintage service label with date range of 1977-1980,  as opposed to a current world one.

I would vote for an identical reproduction, not a "2016" version. If not, what is left of this quest? May as well stick a "Nike" sticker where the brake booster sticker was.
I don't want to be forced out of the "authentic" area into the repro-area, just because some scammers are trying to fake a car history.

Coil stickers, though I dont think mine look like that, the bottom one is missing entirely and the top one has a graphic of an explosion and perhaps the word Transis**

If you google, most of them have the Bosch 12V sticker on them.

both are  50x25mm

The coil stickers are correct except the bottom sticker should say "made in Germany", they are hard to source and I found them in Poland as they suit the early Porsche 911.

Yes the new coils have three stickers and the Bosch sticker has dropped the "made in Germany" as they are now made elsewhere.
I will now spend the next 15 minutes admiring the photo of your engine bay Mr Ptashek, fresh nickel plating and Icon Gold in the engine bay makes it look like gods own jewellery box.

I have a concern about some of the decals.  On most of the W116 cars, the decals that were affixed to the radiator were originally not what is available now. They looked like maybe they were an opaque plastic stencil that was gummed on the back side.  (there is a name for what I am trying to describe, I just don't know what it is called)  Is trying to reproduce that particular type of decal useless or too expensive, or not desirable?
Title: Re: W116 sticker quest
Post by: floyd111 on 30 March 2016, 08:36 AM
Personally, I would want the same size, same color, same model as the original.
Besides that, I would not vote for genuine reproductions whenever plain paper is involved.
Better to have those remade in waterproof plastic, so they don't fade and deteriorate like their ancestors.
No doubt that some hard-core purists have different ideas about that, but that's just my personal take on this.
I would not, however, want to see aluminum stickers replaced by plastic. That's would not be an improvement
Title: Re: W116 sticker quest
Post by: rumb on 30 March 2016, 10:31 AM
I agree the radiator decals were just that - decals.  They are much more fragile. That is based on what I remember from my W108, though they are long gone from there.

It looks like making decals would be very easy.  I would just keep 4-5 of them and replace every few years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0uvpCaRbbU

Have we determined what if any radiator decals should be on a 6.9?  If there are some, I would be willing to print some myself.

Hi Rumb,

yes - this is a sticker that I would like to reproduce because it is missing on my 6.9.
I will need a good picture and the exact size, then I can create it.
Can you tell me these details?

Is this your car? If so - could you also make a photo of the red sticker on the brake booster (and tell me the exact size
and if it is a paper - or plastic-sticker)?

Thanks,

Hi,

the cruise control sticker reads in three languages "attention sensible to shocks"
Therefore I personally think that this sticker was not used in the factory assembly line (because once
this control unit was installed into the car there is no need for this sticker anymore).

Not so for control units that are sold later as spare parts.

But of course - I may be wrong  ;)

I think I have a NOS Control unit with sticker here, I will check it tomorrow and let you know.

to all that are interested in this sticker: please let me know, if there are at least 4 of you that are
interested I will reproduce the sticker - the list is getting longer... ;-)

No sticker on the cruise control control unit.
But that is no proof as these pictures are often pictures

Title: Brake booster Sticker
Post by: tcj on 03 April 2016, 06:41 AM
Hi,

by the way: take a look at the two pictures rumb posted above:
Even here you can see the brake booster sticker I reproduced a few days ago. So this
is another proof that this is the original sticker.

Hi Thomas,

My CC actuator still has the orange sticker (although not in great shape).  Looks identical to the pic you posted. So yes, 2 please.  Actuator has been repainted so the sticker will bring back that 1977 dealer look  ;)

thanks - is noted down. Which material? Paper like original or plastic so it is more durable?

Hi Thomas
I would like two cruise control actuator stickers in plastic (or the aluminiumised type) if they are available.  My car originally had a paper sticker that disintegrated when I was washing the engine bay.  I personally would go the plastic sticker route, because even new paper ones will once again fall apart if you need to do any cleaning under the hood.
Many thanks,
Gavin

Hi gavin,

thanks - will also make them in pastic or alu.
As you can see on my pics my sticker is folded so it is difficult to measure the exact size.

Is your disintegrated sticker still flat? If so could you put a measuring tape on it and tell me the exact width?
Should be something like 13cm.

Thanks,
Thomas

fuel flap:
Original was 116 584 02 39 for all cars (exept 6.9), later replaced by 116 584 21 39.
The 6.9 has 116 584 10 39.

I am able to reproduce them all, just tell me if you are interested.

Hi Thomas,

Interested in 2 fuel lid sticker.  Mine is dark green / white font (your first pic).  They're alu type if I'm not mistaken.

Thx

Hi Thomas

Sadly my cruise control actuator sticker is no longer...  But I'd really like the aluminiumised type.

I also dug out my old slam panel, and I need two more stickers.  The one for the lights? They applied heat to this sticker to see if they could get it off, but it wouldn't budge.  Its original height would have been 45 mm.  See the original.  It is one of those aluminiumised types.

I would also like the seat belt sticker, again in an aluminiumised format if possible.

Kind regards,
Gavin

Hi Thomas, lets go with the plastic or better for the Tempomat sticker as everyone here seems to agree that if you reproduce in paper it will fail again over time.

As the seat belt sticker doesn't exist in germany: could you please identify the exact text in the third line?

Is it either...
BS. AU 48 1965
BS. AU 48a 1965
BS. AU 48: 1965
BS. AU 48a: 1965

I see now that the "E" numbers are to do with European harmonisation (and not specifically only headlamps):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Forum_for_Harmonization_of_Vehicle_Regulations (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Forum_for_Harmonization_of_Vehicle_Regulations)

Hi Thomas
I think the sticker must be one of the two emboldened texts, but we will need someone else from the UK or with a UK vehicle to confirm.

I'm quite certain the sticker reads "BS AU 48 : 1965" and was the same on all UK (maybe AU too?) delivered cars.

Or, should i step in and get them all produced myself?

What stickers are now available as reproductions?

Hi Stan,

some stickers are ready to order (see below), but the printer is ill now so I have to wait for the rest.
Soon to come (don't know when the printer is back to work)
- fuel flap (3 versions)
- HPF-tank
- red service sticker
- cruise control

Thanks,
Thomas

maybe I used the wrong term (I don't speak native english) - I wanted to say that the
guy who owns the local printer shop is ill.
And no - these are no paper prints. It is made of durable plastics.

updating the sticker thread:
The cruise control decal is ready, I made to versions:
- paper - very close to the original decal
- laminated: still close to the original decal, but more durable when exposed to the weather.

Other stickers that are available at the moment (more to come):
- the two small red AC-stickers: 123 835 00 88 and 108 835 00 88 for early W116 until ~1977
- the bigger red AC-Sticker: 123 835 01 88 for W116 from ~1977.
Just take a look in your engine compartment. If you find the later replacement 124 835 01 88
that mercedes sells for some years now you may want to change to the correct sticker.
You will see that the 124-Sticker doesn't mention the W116 but newer cars as the W124 and W201
- The valve cover of the M116, M117 and M100-engines need two of the 115 584 36 21-Stickers.
- The valve cover of the M116, M117-engines (K-Jet) needs the 117 584 3221-Sticker
- The valve cover of the M100-engines needs the 100 584 0738-Sticker
- Your Brake Booster needs one blue ATE-Sticker. At the moment available with date codes 5/76 and 7/78.

Just to compare the cruise control sticker I added a picture of a NOS CC-Unit.

If you need a sticker - just PM me.

Kind regards,
Thomas

I am very much interested in those two.
Below is a better image of the seatbelt anchorage sticker, taken from Type17s 350. I think Marku here had some details on the other sticker.

Here's also another incarnation of the ATE brake booster sticker.
As for sizes, I had no way to measure it on the day, so can't say exactly but will do my best to find out. It's roughly 15x50mm, white print on black vinyl base.

Did I? I don't remember but my 450 has both, the first is an embossed metal plate fixed by two screws and the second brake booster sticker is much smaller - a single line.

It would sure be great to receive an update on this matter.. What stickers have been reproduced by now?
Could we have a list and prices?
Is this still ongoing, or should I proceed and have all 50 of them done myself?
Title: Re: W116 sticker quest
Post by: tcj on 18 October 2016, 09:55 AM
yes - its still ongoing. Will show an update when I am satisfied with all new stickers.
The tempomat-sticker is taking time at the moment->its a difficult one because of the neon colors.
It looks perfect - but sticks poorly to the tempomat unit. So another approach is needed.
HPF-Sticker on the HPF-Tank has to be tested when being covered by hydraulik oil...
That all takes time. Just be patient.

I had sent some 35 different ones to the sticker factory 6 months ago. Aluminum, plastic, all sorts of them.

How come your people have problems producing some of them?

QuoteMaybe give the tough cases to me?

Hi Stan,

do as you like. I am primarily doing these stickers for my cars, and my cars are able to drive without stickers  ;) so I don't want to
put pressure on me or the other persons that are involved.

Stan - the demand for stickers is rather low, don't expect much.
- I offered the two red AC-Stickers years ago (also on this website) after I made them for my W116
and I sold this number of stickers: "0"
- Through this thread I sold this number of stickers upto now: "5". Thanks to Peter and you.
- If I counted right there is further interest in approx. 20 Stickers.
That for 16 different stickers I intend to make.

So you may understand now that I dont want to hurry, I am just making stickers for my cars. And when
they are ready I am glad to offer them in this forum.
Are your cars ready so you are in urgend need for stickers?

Stan: make every sticker you want. Just coordinate this with me so we don't work on the same stickers.

Thomas

Like the others, I am not in a hurry, and personally, I have no interest in selling any for profits.
I just want 2 or 3 sets for my 280"s, somewhere in 2017.
So, Thomas, what you feel from my side is not pressure, but an offer to relieve pressure, in case you don't have the time, lost interest, or are faced with complications.
We're talking 50 to 75 different stickers here that need exact reproduction. Not a small task if you have a life.
The cost is another factor. Even though each sticker will cost only 30-50 euros to reproduce (in 500pcs min.) The fact that we have 75 pcs to do really hurts the wallet.
So, again, can I help? And if so, which stickers do you want me to do? Or leave it with you? Also good.

Hello everyone,

Such a vast amount of effort and time has been dedicated to enlightening us all globally on W116 stickers and all the permutations.

THANK YOU.

I wondered whether anyone was still planning to reproduce some of these stickers to keep the W116 models looking as good as they do?

I do understand that this is a personal project for some of our fellow members.

Happy motoring!

Warm regards.

I heard you. I'm one of those that most need to complete my sticker set, if I am ever to present a 0-mile W116.
I started the thread way back for just that purpose, quickly finding out that finding samples of the originals is but a first step. To reproduce them properly , some are paper, some metallic, some plastic or plastified. Then, there are unique stickers to certain W116 classes, creating quite a range of stickers to be produced, and not cheap. I am probably best situated when it comes to having these reproduced.. Taiwan, home of the plastics, and all!
Service is proper, quick and affordable, but just like abroad there is a 100-1000 sticker minimum. Great if you need 1000 of each. Not great of you need less than 50 of each, in 100 types/formats.

I think along the way there have been members who indicated they would want a full sticker set, but is it a big enough group? And what would be their budget for a full class-specific sticker set? Should we have a poll?
I wouldn't mind the work of collecting and reproducing stickers for my own- and other classes, or prepaying for the lot. -or shipping them. I wouldn't mind losing some money on it either, since it solves an important problem I need to solve.
But, normally, my 1978 280S/SE -specific stickers are the ones  that I would  have reproduced.
With some confirmation that there will be enough takers, it would not be a big next step to expand to V8 class sticker sets.
Basically, we would need to revisit this topic from scratch, do a stocktake of what the interest is, and what is reuired to get to a succesfull end,

If you are going to accept reproductions why not print your own? Plenty of adhesive plastic sheet for inkjet, laser etc. All you need is a set of good examples.
