W116 Overriders/Grille Guards

I saw this car on craigslist and I must have an overrider/grille guard set like it! Is it factory or aftermarket?

Everyone to their own taste, I suppose, but those overriders are even uglier -- if that's possible -- than those extended US bumpers!   :(   Gimme standard, all-chrome, Euro bumpers any time, designed as they were meant to be by M-B and not to some  petty bureaucrat's specifications.

As for the notion that bumpers had to survive a 5 mph collision ...

The rear bumper on my 116 has a really small wrinkle on each corner. These barely noticeable dings (one has to know they're there in order to spot them) are the only damage sustained when a Daewoo completely demolished itself on one corner and a Hyundai on the other (okay, so those aren't really cars by my definition, but they are allowed on the roads). In both instances I was stationary and the other vehicles were travelling at 50-60 km/h (30-35 mph). I doubt those ugly "5 mph" monstrosities would have fared any better.

Both the offending cars -- each less than a year old -- were written off, and the driver of one was moderately injured when her seatbelt mountings failed, door flung open, and she was ejected onto the roadway.

But hey -- if those overriders float your boat, then go for them.  8)

I've been looking for a pic of the smaller US ones.  There are smaller versions - imagine those big ones but without the fins and perhaps a bit smaller.  But what is OEM and what's not I don't know.  Those overriders are huge though.  Never seen them that big before.

Too right, they are.

At least with the 5MPH bumpers, you've got somewhere to sit when you're having a break on the side of the road. ;)

You could also attach some driving lights to the grille guard.

I figure that after all the reactions of disgust these pictures bring whenever I post them that if I do find a set I will be able to get them very cheaply. ;)

Those "things" look like sharks circling for the kill; they're ugly as hell! I don't mind my "regular" US bumpers, but those take the cake. Please hide them from us; they're frightening the animals and the children.   :o

That car was in the Tacoma, Washington craigslist a while back. I would have bought the car for the bumper parts and then resold it if I had the money and knew I could get it back.

The car is up for sale again, at $1,450 this time! I went and looked at them in person. The fit is poor, so probably not a dealer item, but I'm sure I could fix them. I looked up the VIN and it does not mention them. The salesman turned down my offer to buy the overriders. Does anyone want to buy the car? I'll give you $100 for the grille guard and overriders! http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/ctd/1602396307.html

I also saw a W115 for sale with similar set. I want to know who made them!

They actually do look even more ridiculous on the 115, who would have thought it possible?? ;D

They're just so ugly yet I'm really excited for you to find a set!!!  I even spent an hour last night scouring the internet for something, anything!

I just can't believe that someone took a look at those stock bumpers and decided they just weren't gonna cut it!!!  A little black and white paint and a siren and those things and you've got yourself an M-B police car.

Squiggle Dog

I wonder if maybe they were a generic J.C. Whitney accessory? But no one seems to know. On cars I feel the more bumper, the better. I actually have a set of special 6.9 bumpers with the large covers if I never find a set of these overriders.

Why would you want to add those ugly overriders to your W116? They remind me of the cow catchers they used to put on the front of old steam locomotives!

Buy that car but remove those piece of junk guards!

Squiggle Dog

I don't want the car, I want the guards! I am looking for a 300SD, anyway (I don't care for gasoline powered engines much). The grille guard gives added protection to the grille if someone decides to back into it (though I would value the grille guard more than the grille). It also gives the car a deluxe, "optioned" look and the "shark fins" add style.

Just for all of your remarks, you guys have to give some to me if you come across them (I will pay shipping). ;D

In the meantime I will install some 6.9 bumpers with the extra big rubber covers. The large bumpers with shock absorbers are one of the things I love about the W116 and I call them "Autobahn bumpers".
