Sorry to be controversial but nothing about the bars/bumpers/protectors flows in any way with the shape of the car. It's like they let a 4 year old kid design the extras.

Neil.

To my eye, they flow perfectly. For the record, I also like chrome wheel arch trim.

Pull up to the bumper, bay-bay!

This is a sketch I did years ago of how I wanted my 300SD to look. My plans are still very similar, but since then I've acquired a set of 6.9 bumpers (I think a grille guard would still fit them), a set of headlight guards, a roof rack, some grille badges, and decided that I wanted to go with painted wheel covers instead of bundts. I've also decided against pinstriping.

My thanks to 1970s pimpmobiles for the inspiration.

Floyd111, thanks for looking, but those are the bumper tips that every North American W116 came with after 1973.

that's what I thought as well. I do recall finding them in very different sizes a few years ago, be it that the small ones were dominant back then as well.
You have to consider that they may be as rare as they are because 9 out 10 people found them repulsive enough to simply toss them, haha!

The front bumper uses larger ones than the rear bumper, and there are also left and right sides, so four different part numbers for the North American bumpers.

A 1978 W116 300SD with the awesome bumpers just showed up on eBay. If only I could justify spending the $16,750 to buy the car so I could remove and keep the bumper parts. :P I still wish I knew who made these parts and where I could get them. My fintail is going to need a grille guard, too.

Here is another item of which I am fond; stone guards! I think Australia was the only country to get them. On my W116:

Also notice the little stone guards over the fog lights. Don't laugh--they've probably saved me from having to buy new glass lenses in this rocky desert.

Here are some for a W111. I must have them, too (though the headlight lenses seem like they also need protection)!

These windshield stone guards are pretty nifty. Imagine no longer having to worry about chipped and cracked windshields, especially if you drive a fintail and can't get a new windshield anymore. They are still being made and are only about $200USD plus whatever shipping is from Australia.

Also cool are skid plates. I got the one on my W116 from South Africa.

I have a set of skid plates for the W111 fintails (oil pan, fuel lines, and differential). There was also one available for the fuel tank, but it was missing as the car had a tow hitch on it.

Found a set for 300SE..

Typ "mercedes"  in the search bar if it hasn't already searched for you. Scroll way down.

Found one for W116 in Australia as well, years ago, and got a set. Still thinking whether it will really enhance the look or not. Too many decorations in the front, like badges, mesh guards, rubber bumpers and parking pennants kind of make the rest of the car look plain, the front too busy.

Also wondering whether the W116 guards should/could be anodized, coated, chromed or galvanized, to make them pop a bit more.

Wow, they do exist! And they are very expensive at $612.23 USD! It looks like all they do is fit between the bezel and the lens. I could probably make those easily enough if I can find the mesh material.

I'll have to find a source for that stainless steel wire mesh so I can make my own W111 headlight stone guards and then sell them for $600 a pair. Haha.

Meanwhile, look, they also made ones for the W107!

And the W123!

Any car with round headlights (like the W110 chassis or other models with round sealed beams) can take the commonly found round ones.

These are mine. What do you think is better? Matt patina or R107 shiny chrome?

I like shiny most of the time, but it depends upon context. My W116 headlight stone guards are shiny except for the lower horizontal section, which is more of a matte finish. I suppose there is a reason for this, and the look is fine with me.

Seems you got exactly the same guards as I have from Australia. Any Australians here have any idea about the history of these guards? Who built them? Who sold them?
