I think the number is   000 018 0702, but searches for this number produce a variety of different engine oil cap photos.
Is there a logic to this? What car gets which oil cap? Polished or matte aluminium? Black plastic?

The first Mercedes-Benz I saw with a plastic oil cap was a W201, so 1984 onwards, at least for me.

For the duration of W116 production, I believe a W116 should have this, the cap on the left.  It's just steel in blue zinc.

Was there no polished cap on the w116?

carl888

No polished anything on a W116 :)

Don't forget that early models (up until 1977) had a yellow zinc oil cap.

Stan, the reason why you get so many results is because the metal oil cap was replaced by the plastic one, and the plastic one also changed part numbers several times over the years.  Essentially, one part number will equal many erroneous results for a purist.

A pic from a brochure from 1978 but I looked at some earlier M110 engine images I can't see a yellow oil cap at all.  I wonder if it was only for a year or two and my brochures miss that?  (1972 and 1978)

1978 V8, appears to have the same cap.  Don't have access to an earlier brochure however for the V8, anyone?

Both my '77 350 and '79 450 came with the silver cap, with star, but no "oil" inscription.
In my case, it was the exact same part as the fuel tank cap.

Yes my '74 450 has the same metal cap for oil and fuel both with star and nothing else.

Hard to get an original style oil cap from MB now - when we were restoring a Pagoda in 2014, we ordered a new one, using the original part number (from the M130 single cam 2.8 i6 engine) - and received the plastic W201 version...

I also received a modern plastic fuel cap when I ordered one using a 116 part number - ended up just using the new seal (which is why I ordered a fuel cap in the first place).

PS: My '76 350 has its original silver zinc cap, with MB star symbol and an OEL script. IIRC, the UK brochure for '76 also shows the same kind of caps (will check).

Keep an eye on ebay I have seen them occasionally. What about a visit to the breakers?

You are right again Type 17 my metal fuel filler cap has nothing on it but the star. The metal oil cap has the star and OEL. Very unobservant of me but I had swapped them over because having polished the cam covers the fuel cap looked better.

If you want to though the metal ones do polish up well with a bit of brasso, not sure how to keep it that way though.

Buff it with solvent based hardwood floor wax after every wash, and it'll keep forever.
