Title: vinyl dye - centre console
Post by: nathan on 21 July 2018, 10:34 PM
i have never been a fan of dying interior pieces, im very sceptical of its longevity. however, my brothers console got buggered many years ago by the MB paint shop (before i stopped trusting them and did it all myself!), and they dyed a brown console blue to replace it. years later, it looks absolutely crap. so i came across two very nice consoles with intact plastic strips (at the top, you know the ones that break!) and at the radio support. i had the guy do them and they came up nicely.
hopefully newer dye technology is superior.  one part problem is that rubbery vinyl is slightly flexible which is why the stuff can flex off.

They look really good. I need to do mine and the head rests that have faded. What did you use? I have seen spray cans of vinyl dye but the colour match you have got looks perfect.

Hi Marku,

you dont want me doing it, im colour blind so im glad you say the colour is good!  there is a guy here in our city (and im sure they are in every city) as a vinyl repair and dye business.   after the carpets were redone on teh side it does look pretty good!
not sure what he used though but it wasn't a simple can of spray

regards
Nathan

There have been threads on this topic before. I think I remember the Rustoleum vinyl dye being advised as the best.. It's what I imported as well. Haven't tried it yet. But, here in Taiwan I bough brand X for my CRV, and all the panels still look like new after treatment. 2 years baking in the sun, being battered in jungle life. I also did all the carpets, and the only error there was mine, coz you need lots of paint to properly soak them in color. I used too few to save money. No peeling of any sorts, though.

I used vinyl dye from GAHH to change the color of this grey armrest to Bamboo.

It went on really nicely but it seems more like a paint than a dye. I've wondered how much some dark brown dye would hide cracks in my center console.

I Stripped out the entire interior and took it to a leather and vinyl restorer.
He used an acrylic vinyl paint on the plastics and dye on the seat leather.

They all look really good and mine is looking very tired including the carpets. Will have to explore what options are available locally.

I have used vinyl dye from Leatherique to change color of my MG interior from med yellow to gray. It worked very well and made them look like new.  4 years later they have not cracked, peeled or anything and still looks great.

hi Rumb

I don't know the brand of dye, I trusted he knew what he was doing.  has run this business for over 20 years.
and he just colour matched the plastics to blend in.
