Tinting over tinted windows

My car has OE tinted windows (code 592 from 01.01.1972 " GREEN HEAT-INSULATING GLASS ALL ROUND, HEATED REAR WINDOW, LAMINATED SAFETY GLASS - TINTED).    After repeatedly watching the 6.9 chase scene in 'Lost Highway'  I think it's time to go with a more sinister look, as the OE tinting just isn't quite dark enough.  I'd go just a bit darker.

The OE tint is clearly a film, not actually colored glass.  So here's the question:  can a good shop apply another film over the original or would they have to remove the OE film?  And could the OE film be preserved if somebody wanted to remove the new film?  I'm trying not to do irreversible modifications.  Thanks as always and cheers,
-Dave

The heat insulating glass doesn't have a removable film, I think it is a coating of some  description and is effectively part of the glass.

Putting film on top is no problem at all.

I don't think there is such thing as original film on a W116. The glass is made of green heat-absorbing material. If your glass has film on it, it was likely added aftermarket. I have the green tinted glass on my car, and dark 3M film over it. A must in Phoenix, as the heat-absorbing glass isn't terribly effective.

I wouldn't put a second layer of film over another layer. You can actually remove old film without too much effort. You'll have to look it up, but I think all you need is a heat gun and rubbing alcohol--something along those lines. I've done it before, just can't remember the process. I also attempted to apply new film, but there was too much dust and dog hair getting trapped under the film, so I had the Mazda dealership do it, although they put razor cuts on the outside of the glass when they cut the tint, and they carved out big chunks of the inside of the rear windshield seal in the process. >:(

Interesting, thanks gents!  The car absolutely DOES have a film, so i guess somebody did that at some point.  Supposedly it was an Arizona car for most of its life.  As you say Scott, the green tint is nowhere enough for Utah much less Arizona.  Guess I'll be going to a tinting shop.  Cheers,
