Title: Tatty gear knob removal
Post by: irvine on 14 May 2018, 07:45 AM
Hey everyone, my auto gear knob is looking a bit tatty, I'm told the plastic gear knob is moulded to the gear leaver

How do I remove the gear leaver, is it an easy job or have I got to remove half the dash.

Thanks Neil.

That is a job that you do have to remove the center console to access the bolts that hold the shift indicator, and then there is a lock nut  that releases the shift handle/knob.  So unfortunately it is a big job. All the heater control parts need disconnected. First time I would say about 4 hours.

It's a lot easier with both front seats removed, but that's another good job.  But at least it would give you opportunity to clean a lubricate a lot of the interior that is rarely accessed.

I do hope your kidding me mate....

If that's the case I'm cutting off the old one and fleeing on another.

When I changed out the bushings on the shifter I just had to remove the wood surround and not the whole centre console.

How did you remove the surround?

ash try out - push down and pull out, disconnect electrical connector on L side as it comes out
two screws and then black metal Frame out
lift wood up then back.
4 x10mm? holding black plastic surround with gear indicator out.
then you need to slide a 14mm wrench from memory to base of gear shifter and hold the 14 whilst you this the shifter from memory.
I think thats it.
console does not need to come out for this one.

Can you post up what you wind up doing with yours? I always thought some nice leather-wrapped hand grip would look good there (especially since I occasionally rest my hand on it), but it hasn't been a priority for me to pursue replacing yet, so I hadn't looked into it further.

Will do mate.
Was thinking of a simple wooden ball same as or close to the wood in the dash, or a polished ball classic Ferrari style.
Think that the selector knob just looks silly, like a wort on the interior.
