Sunroof Frame removal

Thanks Styria for making me brave enough to remove the sunroof frame.

I have subsequently - very gently - eased the fabric off the frame as it will get dirty/damaged if left lying around my shed.

It has exposed a patch of rust in the welded in frame in the cars's roof about 5cm, (2inches) long and I guess I will probably try to MIG in a patch without deforming the roof panel.

Both sides of the frame at the forward drains are rotten and I guess will need to be cut and patched but the metal seems to be of reasonable thickness and it will just be a matter of slowly slowly.

Any hints from past experience greatly appreciated.

I already have a new set of seals - front sides and rear and they are the same pattern as the ones I have taken off.
I will get hold of a new frame to body seal as it seems to be a specialised plastic/rubber compound and the old one is compressed.

Ordered New Sunroof Seal today - $30 at Diesel Motors - too cheap to go looking outside main agents.

Bill, I just noticed your avatar, ie the porsche.  Were you driving?  It looks very nasty, I hope noone got hurt.  Shame about the car of course.

My wife and I were crossing the Tonkin Highway / Welshpool Rd intersection in Perth heading for Kalamunda when were hit in the side by a 60 series Landcruiser that came through a red light at 100 Km/hr.

We were pushed about a 100 Metres sideways - I was K.O'd for a few minutes and my wife broke a rib but we opened the doors and stepped out - hence "O lucky Day".

He hit us in the right front wheel, spun the car around and took the back out of the car as well - fortunately left the middle alone except where my head went through the side window.

My near purchase of a CLS 500 got changed to an ML 500 on "She who must be obeyed instructions" and my MX5 was sold within 5 days for a 1 year old Falcon - for domestic taxi duties - we do a lot of mileage.

The ML arrives on the 22-01-07 on the boat and I have mixed feelings as I'm not sure I will be happy with a 4WD - so I ordered it with almost everything.

It will be nice to get behind a Mercedes V8 again.

Thanks for the concern.

Bloody hell!  I'll say no more

Well I think you'll love the ML.  We got a Territory Ghia and that stretched the budget.  I don't think we could afford to pay off a new MB.  Well maybe an A class  :D .  But if the Territory and ML have anything in common it's the size and height.  I never get tired driving it on long distances and the handling and view from a higher position is an advantage.  I can only imagine the ML would excel on many of the Territory's good handling, ride height and comfort qualities in an SUV not to mention the immense increase in engine size.

I love the shape of the new ML too.  If the current model had been available two years ago as two or three year old 2nd hand cars, I may have convinced my wife to get behind a circle and star.  Look forward to perhaps a critique of it down the track after you've had a bit of a play.

Simon
