Title: Steering wheel thickness?
Post by: Zimmersci on 18 June 2022, 03:21 PM
Hi there
I just bought an immaculate 1978 450SEL and have a question;
What is the thickness of the steering wheel grip? I could have sworn, or my memory serves me that it was about an inch, nicely padded. Mine seems thinner, though pliable. Could it be a repro? Am I totally wrong?  :o
Your insight will be appreciated
Thanks

Welcome here :)

I think this is the first post I have seen on steering wheel thickness 8)

Best post a pic of what you have, at least if you might think it is an aftermarket wheel fitted?  Part number is 116 460 00 03, but I am pretty sure the W123 (and likely other models like 107) also shared the same wheel, for at least some of the production run.

there is two thickness in original wheels, and its not a chrome ring/non chrome ring thing. my older wheel had a thicker wheel.  I bought a near new one and its definitely thinner, maybe 15mm or something.  I agree the older one was probably 20mm or so.  You can definitely pick it in the hand!
