steering wheel pads

While divulging the possibly epic mistake I made, may I ask: Are/were there 2 different steering wheel horn pads for the W116. My costly zebrano steering wheel and my NOS pad seem to.. well.. not fit.

There were more than two versions of the steering wheel.
See this old thread:

One change was only related to the shaft spline size, which was larger on late cars. The pad was identical between these two (I have both in my stash).
