Title: side sill metallic strip replacement
Post by: nathan on 14 October 2018, 10:28 AM

hi guys

the replacement of the strip makes all the difference to entering your 116. you can buy them on eBay.de for about 20 AUD for all 4 door sills.

Some time ago I asked the very question as I thought mine were looking worn. Thought then of exploring having them in stainless steel as I know a friendly shop. Something I have yet to do so you have reminded me. Lot of people on the forum said about replacing the metal strips but didn't know that they were available. I have some adhesive aluminium which I was also going to try. Still can't believe that MB though could put something so cheap on the car.

One could very well go find a stainless-company, people that do bars, kitchens, vents and such. Bending a piece of polished stainless into the right shape to become a sil should be a walk in the park. I should have thought of this before I ordered mine from Eres. They were pretty cheap, maybe 50usd per set of 4, so I imagine having them made locally should not break the bank.

As posted by Diesel 617 https://forum.w116.org/interiors-and-exteriors/door-cills/ I said then that I thought that the sills must have polished metal once as some early sales brochures I have seemed to show. Still a bit undecided as I tend to go with the original. Be great if it could be proved that they had been originally. Anyone got a '72 car?

Mark, about 4 years ago I parted out a 1972 450se.  It was a really early one. The last six digits of the VIN were 000016.  It had the early sill liners that you're referring to.  I saved them, and all of the metal strips are stainless steel with a "brushed" finish on them.  They're not shiny, but they do have a gloss to them, but nothing resembling a mirror finish.

If you'll look at the pic, this 1973 450SEL at the wrecking yard (it's crushed now) had the early type with three strips on them. I'm not sure if this is to what you're referring, or if there were actually some that were made entirely of metal.

SD, that ones odd.  it has what looks like early wood and round fader, but later model velour loop carpet.  perhaps this 'twin stripe' models were US only? ive never seen them here having seen/wrecked a lot of 116s. as for complete steel, they are aftermarket things only.  I think the 140 was the first to have completely metal entry sills.

Could well explain the photo I have - they appear just shiny. Can't think what possessed MB to change to the plastic ones- they haven't worn well.
