Reinstalling instrument cluster

I just swapped in a newer and better cluster.  Now my speedo not only doesn't wiggle but it's also spot-on accurate.  Anyway, when removing the old one that rubber strip thing just kind of fell out before I could see how it was fitted.  And now, of course, reinstalling the cluster isn't working well.  It seems to need that strip to keep it snug but for the life of me I can't figure out where it goes.  There is a small channel around the cluster.  The strip has a small flange on one side that kind of fits into the channel.  But this seems to make the whole thing much to tight.  Any tips?  Thanks much!  Cheers,

Do you mean that ribbed rubber strip that's shaped like the outline of the cluster housing?
If yes, then your hunch is right. It fits around the back of the housing, with the flange facing towards the cabin - and its exact purpose is to make the cluster fit nice and tight, as it's a press fit.

Exactly.  Thanks, I'll try again.
Got it.  The trick is for the flange to be pointed up and positioned behind the ridge towards the rear of the cluster.  For some reason there's a slot going around the front of the cluster which the flange happens to fit very well.  And is 100% impossible to fit.
