Received my Data Cards

Thanks to CraigS I sent an e-mail to martin-oswald.heinzelmann@daimler.com requesting the data card for my 6.9.

It arrived back within 12 hours complete with the special order for the electric rear seat (for which it was removed from the line to be fitted) which explains why my car was delivered a day after one of Craigs - even though Craig's car is two digits after mine.

Flushed with success I requested the card for my 450SEL and received that a day later.

Marvellous service.

Excuse my ignorance.....but the data cards are like a birth certificate aren't they?

Does this service cost anything? Now there would be a surprise if it were free!

Prepare to be surprised, when there was a frenzy on 107 SL's in the QLD club, 2 of us rang Melbourne and got fax copies of our data cards, gratis!

This is what they will send you (without my annotations)

The "Birth Certificate" is a fancy rendering of the same information, for which you will have the pleasure of paying EUR 100 for.

The two I have arrived as zipped PDF files - there was no cost involved.

Chris had already collected the faxed one but the quality was very poor in the finer detail.

The 6.9 one is a dark scan of the same thing but the quality is better - I will fiddle with it in photoshop.
The 4.5 one is very clear and readable.

Hi Bill,

Do you have to provide proof of ownership, or other documentation, or is it sufficient to provide the VIN?

Thanks.

When I got a copy of the data card for my old 280SEL from Melbourne, the bloke asked me to fax a copy of the rego papers as proof of ownership.

I just sent an e-mail with my VIN but I did include my membership No of the M-100 club on both occasions.

Not sure whether that membership number would make any differnce or not but I didn't give any proof of ownership.

You are supposed to send a copy of the ownership papers, or, failing that, a receipt to prove you own it. In reality, you can make up a receipt, so it is not critical, but generally they will want something. I guess it protects them in some way.

I had them if they wanted them but I was never asked for anything.

To quote from the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center web site

"6. What is a data card, and where can I get one?
You can obtain a data card for your Mercedes-Benz from the Classic Center. This is a written proof of production with code numbers indicating the condition in which your car left the factory. To obtain a data card, you should send us a proof of ownership (e.g. a copy of the vehicle papers, purchase contract, etc.) by fax or mail."

I got round to sending a request for my Lady's data card. Let's hope it comes soon.
Over here, the more documentation you have the higher you can push the value of the car. I already have all of the importation docs both originals and period duplicates.
The MB club president suggested that if I were ever to sell I should think of no less than R$40,000 and that's just to get the conversation started!

I always say that you should think of it in your own money!
Why, if someone's annual salary is US$40,000 or R$40,000 it would be like spending a year's salary on a car. However, in US$ it's around US$22,000 at todays rates.
