..another option box not ticked when mine was ordered.   Ought to be a straightforward install when I've found the pieces, no?

Yes, just make sure you have the connection brackets supplied.
BTW, there is an eBay vendor, selling the complete bracket-kit, new, aftermarket.

And make sure that you are comfortable with cutting holes in your seat coverings.  There is no room for error here.

Anyone know what the procedure would be if one was to go down that path? Is there something on the seat frame where the brackets attach?

rumb

the brackets screw or bolt into existing holes, very easy.  As mentioned the hardest part is cutting hole in leather for escutcheon ring.

Cool thanks Rumb, sounds simple enough. I might order a used kit off eBay. May as well rebuild the seats while I'm at it.

I would think just buy a wrecked vertical part of the seat. these are probably the only seat cushion in the car reliably in good shape as they aren't used much.  in saying that, the horizontal is sometimes sun burnt!

Would someone who has factory installed rear headrests mind taking a couple photos close up from the top and bottom of the seat back to show the location of the holes in the rear seat? Possibly with a ruler in the shot to show the distance from the rear edge of the seat back?

I imagine it would be relatively straightforward to figure out where to place the holes given the mounting bracket location under the seat as a guide, but especially because they are elongated holes, apparently, it would be quite nice to have a clear visual!

From memory all seat back frames have headrest holes in them so when I retro fitted headrests to my W123 I used these as a guide and cut up from underneath. As the plastic trims have quite a big lip on them you can't really go too wrong.

Ah, great! Thanks. I saw on another forum for a W123, I think, where someone somehow installed them too far forward, and I wouldn't want to wind up cutting the leather in the wrong place!
