Rear hat rack "stiffening"
« on: 22 August 2017, 12:51 PM »
Hi guys

Just some ramblings/musings from me, but when I recently replaced the rear window seal this got me thinking on the correct fitment of the rear hat rack/parcel shelf "stiffening".  There are vents right against the window which I believe is for venting stale air from the cabin which in turn gets replaced by the fresh air vent below the wipers (also if you have your ACC system in OFF mode the vents for fresh air intake close and you get no fresh air entering the cabin FYI)

Thus I would think that the stiffening must sit in front (towards driving forward direction) of these vents so as not not to block the exit flow of air, correct?  Excuse me if this is very obvious and common knowledge but I always thought this section on my car was warped due to sun exposure perhaps, but now it seems like it has to in fact curve away from the rear window to allow for air flow?

Any experts care to weigh in?

Cheers

Hey Dan, I'm no expert but I think you are exactly correct. My parcel shelf is in excellent condition however I noticed that it was slightly ajar from the vents and thought that this was little slack on tolerance. However noting what you have mentioned I think it is designed as it should be.

Thanks Peter.
I think it is by design. There are small notches in the side panels which house the seat belt channels. With these panels lined up correctly the ends of the stiffening should rest in these notches, thus curving it away from the rear glass. Pretty cool design actually!
