Hello all,

The rear bumper on my 1980 450SEL (North American model) has a crack that runs laterally and I was wondering what the base metal is? At the crack it almost looks like pot metal but I can't believe pot metal would be strong enough to be a bumper. If it's made of aluminum I should be able to get it fixed.

Yeah, they are aluminum with a stainless steel cover and rubber trim. These aluminum bumpers are prone to corrosion. I always remove them from the car, take them apart, then use baking soda and vinegar to remove the corrosion. I then touch up those spots with Krylon Rust-Tough Semi-Gloss Black. It matches perfectly and it is almost impossible to tell where the newly painted spots are.

Thanks for the info and tips Squiggle Dog. It should now be able to get the large crack repaired.

Here is a short thread I posted on PeachParts: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=256383 . That was my 1979 300SD and I right now I have some 6.9 bumpers apart that I will be installing on my 1980 300SD.
