Looks pretty awesome!  ;D

Will there be much calibration needed?
'79 280SEL- 560,000 Kms
'73 350SE- getting an AMG facelift
'79 450SEL 6.9

I don't want to put a damper on your purchase but that doesn't look real in my opinion.

it has the tiny MB part numbers at the bottom, which an AMG item should not have
AMG speedometers should read to 300K's

500eguy

I am pretty sure it is a Fake, i just wanted it because it will fit in with all the AMG bits i am putting on the car:) Plus its in km/h :)

Des

That's ok I guess....as long as you don't have any illusions about what you have purschased, the tiny MB lettering at the bottom is the biggest giveaway for me, AMG had their own parts made, not from MB, at this period.

Remember AMG at the time was just a little tuning company, one of many in Germany hotting up the Mercedes product,

if its for a 6.9 remember they have a 3 speed auto and this speedo show 3 shifting points. ( 4 Speed )
Regards Robert
But I like the look of it.

I hope I'm right here but 4spd and 3spd w116's (excluding 6.9's) have  I, II & III markings and go to 240km/hr
6.9's have 3spd boxes too but only have 2 shift markings I & II and read to 260km/hr

Like Des said, the AMG speedo goes to 300km/hr.  We've only heard of 6.9's ever being given AMG treatment, so I'm not sure there'd be other AMG speedos other than the 300km/hr ones.  I can only think of Mforcer's pic below of the classic centre's AMG 6.9 to show an example of the real deal.

Anyway, I too like the disc 500eguy.  It got me thinking that the tripmeter 100m cutout was a bit different to regular w116 speedos.  Despite it has a "107" prefix, we established ages ago that many w116's had 107 part numbered speedo disc.  My 350 does and it's original but doesn't have the 100m extra cutout.  But check the second pic out.  A fellow on the nswmbc forum named Greg knows a lot about 107's and the rallye versions.  He  bought an LHD 500slc not long ago.  Check the similarities of his speedo disc in the second pic and yours.  Same 260km limit, same shift marks, same 100m cutout.

You may be lucky here and scored a disc off an AMG rally 107.  Or it's a late 107's disc with AMG painted on it.  You'll have to tell us your impressions of the AMG logo whether it's been added or not.  Meantime I'll peruse for pics of the rallye cars.
BTW, the white markings appear longer on yours only because it's not framed by the cluster housing which reduces their lengths.  Compare with the 50 - 60km/hr mark on the Greg's speedo to see how much gets hidden.

oscar,
that first speedo is a fake too?  its on a 6.9 but has the first shift at 50kmh which is obviously incorrect.

there always seems to be a lot of attention and drool over the elusive AMG 6.9...im a man of faith, but even i dont really believe much in such a car!  no one has ever posted pics of a known or likely known AMG 6.9...the only stuff available seems to be body part stuff....even the one at the classic centre was a dressed up 6.9 and no more...i know there are brochures reporting over 300hp and so on, but no ones ever dyno'd or shown such a car exists (i know the reported red one on the m-100 site)

so have fun doing up your car 500e...know that its probably as AMG as it gets!

But I can't see a shift marking on the 50km/hr mark :-[
You mean my first pic?  The one at the classic centre that goes to 300km/hr?
I'm a bit disappointed to hear the classic centre 6.9 was a tarted up 6.9.   I always thought it was the real deal. :-\  But isn't that the speedo that AMG69 was after?

I can't find any decent pics of the same 260km/hr one as in the ebay ad except that later model 107's later than 1980 or so with aluminium blocks seem to have the 100m separate cutout, go to 260km/hr and also have the economy guage in the temp/oil pressure/fuel guage in the instrument cluster.  So I reckon your Speedo disc there 500e is off a late 107 of some kind.

That is very interesting, that would be a very cool story if it did come off a 107 rally car!:) the car at the classic center's Disc and my Disc look very different. The shift marks look different when installed in the car.

nathan

good point Oscar, so the speedo evidently wasnt made for a 6.9 at all!
attached is the pic of the classic centre 6.9, and the white 6.9 here in perth with the oddball 320kmh speedo which doesnt look very genuine at all (shame we cant see the part #)
best regards

AMG offered performance upgrades for all Mercedes Benz cars of the period, diesel's 280's etc...
From memory out of the M110 they could produce around 200HP,

along with wheels, bodykits, interior upgrades..etc.

oscar

Yeah you're right.  I saw a German site last night that was linked before probably by yourself of AMG history that shows w123 280's and CE's with the AMG touch. Coloured pentas and chrome trim etc.  Anything was possible and customisable I suppose in the earlier days of AMG.

Nathan, I forgot about the 320 speedo.  It just gets more confusing.  To throw another rare spanner in the works, how about this presumably custom job.  From a very customised 107 that Des linked a long time ago. Click Here  Des I assume this is what you'd want to to race in for Targa Tasmania. ;D

Well thats one way to ensure you can read the speedo through the smaller diameter steering wheel!!
sigh....sitting back contemplating the next purchase..!
