The outside temperature gauge is shown in the 2nd and 3rd posts of this topic. I took that photo (amongst others) of the centre console from the W116 for sale at the Classic Center near Stuttgart.

Thanks for th e-bay link.

Yes that is what I thought the hole was for - might think about a bid for it but they will be available locally

Well this is interesting.  I assumed the space was for column shift indicator like what Des mentioned but a thermometer readout, and one that may fit snug in there, what a good idea.

The foam has always bugged me and seemed cheap, so I came up with a cheaper alternative thanks to my printer.   Although a conservative small LCD speedo would be my choice to fill this gap, for the meantime I went with the top photo.

I really like the look of the analogue in the console version that Des posted, I'll keep an eye out for one of those.

Des, what are the two pushbuttons next to the selector?

this wasnt a 116 option, not for originals anyhow!
the AMG car must have been a 126 retrofit option.
i had this idea a while back but never got round to it, if anyone is considering it, remember that (i believe that) you need the entire harness and sensor so you will also have to track this down in addition to just the displaz unit for the console!

Having thought about this a bit more I wonder if the fact that they had an unused space in the bottom of the Instrument Cluster in the 116 (The column shift must have been a very rare option and those pieces of polystyrene cost money) made them consider using it for the 126 when digital gauges became available and they had to do a re-design.

It was an option in the 126 from the very earliest model as far as I know and was always popular in countries with extreme hot or cold temperatures.

I have a list of W116 option codes and there does indeed appear to be an option code for some sort of temp gauge

J65    OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE INDICATOR

Now I believe the correct style for our cars is the console mounted dial as I showed earlier in this thread.
I don't believe from MB it is correct to have one mounted where the gear indicator is in the dash,

You didn't happen to get a shot of the options code plate from the AMG 6.9 Nathan?

OK OK... :-[
Should have read it more carefully..
All I could read was Volvo..  :-[
Thanks Michael

mate, the point I was trying to make is that Volvo's of the period use an identical style temp gauge, except theirs has the letters VOLVO inside, on the fascia, so you could find one from a Volvo, use some black paint or marker pen and it would look identical to one for an MB, be a lot easier to find one than the original for an w116.

bolbol

It has been a while since I posted in the forum but I have been dealing with a major overheating problem that I just resolved and will be addressed in a separate thread.

I have added a temperature gauge in the middle of the instrument panel. I have used an LCD unit of a W201, the 190E series, this is the most appropriate unit you can use with minor trimming. I have also used a W140 sensor because it was available but I am sure you can use other sensors and they will work just fine.
Wiring is a little tricky as I don't like splicing wires but it was not anything major. Now the temperature gauge functions with the rest of the instrument panel. key position 1, it comes on. internal lights inside the gauge come on with light switch in first position. Dims with Rethrostat key

I will post photos if requested.
