Title: Original Fire Extinguisher
Post by: AMG69 on 11 January 2006, 10:04 PM
Hi, can someone with an original fire extinguisher (preferably RHD (Australia)) tell me the part number for the FE (if there is one) and the all important bracket that I am guessing must be somehow attached to the drivers seat?  Styria of course may have the bracket availabel for sale somewhere amongst his stockpile of bits and pieces!! My car is a UK delivered one and I cant work out where it attaches to the seat - guess when I see one I'll work that out!

I am curious as to why you want a fire extinguisher in your car when your car didn't originally come with one? Can't say I have had much use for mine :D

Chris:

I like the idea of the "complete equipment" set-up; however, the fire extinguishers that would have been original in W116s and earlier are no longer legal in Oz - in terms of their fire-quelling chemical ingredients - so even should you find one to instal for looks, it would need to be discharged and therefore not functional (unless there is some way of charging the old type extinguishers with the now-acceptable chemicals).

Right! Well, I guess I figured a new one would in all likelihood fit in the old bracket so I guess i led you a bit stray asking for teh part number for the extinguisher; more concerned with the bracket - and yes the reason being I always assumed these cars had them standard and am trying to return mine to "as new" condition....!

Chris: I have a lovely, well polished brass one in my Heckflosse sedan, but it's empty; purely for show. The "real" extinguishers hide under the front passenger seat and in the boot. I'd like to get one for each of the other chariots.

When you say "hide" under the passenger seat - is it just bolted to the floor?

There is a plate the extinguisher attaches to but I have no details of that plate. If no one else has details, I'll try finding a part number for you over the weekend.

Yup - the modern extinguisher, that is. It came with a mounting bracket which I've screwed to another bracket I had welded to the floor.

Thanks Styria, the car is still in Adelaide as I flew back - intend getting it back here on the train but have have advised numerous Adelaide Travel Agencies as its only $99 to ship the car IF you have a couple travelling First Class on the train; trick is to be patient and eventually you find a couple book themselves on teh train and you simply ask if they will "take" your car with them.  Ofcourse In Adelaide I simply get my brother to drop the car at teh station and I meet it here at Perth end - no need for teh passnegers to have anything to do with it.

The trip was great, car ran perfectly, even in 42 degree C heat! - left some details in another Thread on fuel consumption from memory!

Radio isnt in yet - no matter, will await return of car!  Also, I have no idea re sunroof tool until car comes back - so please hang onto it. Keep me advised re Fire Extinguisher!

cheers
Chris
