New snow tires

I just had 205/70 Toyo Observe snow tires fitted on my '76 450SEL.

I haven't driven a car with snow tires since the late 70's and those were studs on a 6 cylinder '65 Mustang.

On the way to work tonight, I braked kinda hard and locked it up, something I've never done with the Firestone Indy 500's the car came with.  I would have expected better traction than that considering how soft they are but maybe the ground up walnut shells in the tread work great on ice but not slightly damp asphalt?
