Top mounted speakers verses bottom mounted speakers wasn't a U.S. thing.  Up to 1976 all U.S. cars had bottom mounted speakers. 
1966 250se coupe`, black/dark green leather

and after 1976? was it not US only that used top mounted speakers?

UK models had bottom speakers throughout the entire production run for certain.
1993 "Pearl Blue" W124 280TE
