Title: Need assistance of euro member
Post by: rumb on 18 November 2021, 09:47 AM
I am trying to find out if these people can supply 901 anthracite velours material in ribbed and plain.   All other sources are NLA.  Looks like these people custom dye the fabric.

They only ship to Europe.  I have tried emailing them and received no answer. I would appreciate someones assistance to get availability and pricing and then assist with forwarding me the product once ordered. I need enough for entire interior, seats, arm rest, headrests x4, door panels.

Robert whilst I cannot help on this i see you've also encountered some headaches with getting stuff from the Benz Vaderland...I have found either the response is super quick and efficient in true German fashion or you get crickets.
I can only guess a language barrier might be at play or unwillingness to ship outside of Europe or both ???

rumb, I can help you, but I'm not sure it's the best way forward  :-\

I live in Norway, speak German, but if I buy this I have to pay transport to Norway + VAT 25% + transport to you.

The best thing is maybe to give the transport job to UPS (they pick it up in Germany for you, if supplier permits). I can help you get in contact with dealer, order and fill out papers. I've done similar processes before.

A German member would have more options, if dealer does not allow UPS to pick it up.

DHL is much stronger in Germany than UPS just FYI.  They also have very good door - to - door service into Canada and thus I would assume even better into the US.

Steenbuck only sell to trade customers and will ghost you the second you can't prove you're an upholstery shop. It's a waste of time and effort.

That is correct. It is mentioned on their webpage.

So, given that this is the last place on earth that has anthracite velours, anyone havr a strategy for me to obtain materials?

Jan S, perhaps you could find a shop that would order it? Im all ready resigned to paying whatever it costs.

My own experience with this company, or whoever is behind this name, was nothing but dismal. It appears as if they are entirely uninterested in doing business with anyone but big players, and are one of the main reasons I do not have velours in Goldie (right after velours being junk).

They ignored me when queried directly, and my upholsterer wasn't able to get anything done with them either (despite being a tradesman).

Give it a try, and maybe you'll have more luck, but personally I honestly wouldn't bother. Maybe source a used seat in Germany somewhere? I'd be happy to help with that in any way I can.

I wonder if I could purchase some gray materials from cambrio.de and have it dyed black? Im not sure how that would work to get the color close?  Steenbuck dyes their own white materials into the color ordered anyway.

If you go this route, remember that Mercedes did not offer black velour seat coverings or carpeting....only dark gray (anthracite).

I ordered some black and some gray dye to experiment with. I will try  mixing in different proportions to see how close I can get to Anthracite.

KHM (cabrio.de) offered this as well, and could produce any colour using virgin white velours as source. But there was a MOQ of 100 running meters in that case. That was back in 2013/2014.

It's a silly situation where we have velours suppliers that won't sell, upholstery suppliers that don't offer velours, while all the while there must be a bunch of clients for a quality velours outfit. I know I would grab a set if I could find one in creme (parchment?) I have seen vintage aftermarket sets in velours but walked away out of fear of 35 year storage degeneration.

Anyone know what our velours material is made from?  Is it cotton or synthetic.  Different dyes are uses depending on materials.

For what its worth

Todays Velour fabrics are manufactured from polyester and cotton. It's still used in seat covers & upholstery.
Its a fabric that doesn't breathe well, hence the tendency for it to get uncomfortable in hot climates, or when you've been sitting on it for too long,.

1970's velour may have been more cotton than polyester, I can't remember, (20+ years in the RAG trade, you think I'd know this stuff backwards).
As for dyeing the material, its more common than you think.  Find a dyeing company that does "Fabric Fire retarding" work and they usually have the correct answers & dyes for this sort of job. Its what they do.

Back many years ago, we would get velour fabrics dyed to customer colors (corporate colors) & then get them "Fire/Flame Retardent" treated (as is the law here in Oz for any fabric in public areas).

There will probably be minimum quantity of metres/yards that you would have to do, but you never know.

Anyone have pictures of the bottom/back edge of front seat cushions that shows the grommet and where the wires for seat heaters comes out?

I've never seen a W116 with heated front seats that had this eyelet you're referring to. The rear seats had them, but I've never seen them on the front.  The heat pad wires always run over to the side, down one of the seat hinges, cable tied to the seat bottom springs, and then plugged to the wire harness.  There are also clips that hold the plugs in place.

Thanks for that info.  When I pulled the heating pads out of a parts car I did it fast and dirty.  I remember some grommets somewhere, but not that detail.
