One real difference between the appearance of leather and MBT is that leather channels running down the seat (what are they called?) are stitched and the MBT ones are heat formed. At the moment you can buy a C class Benz with MBT for less than leather but if you want an S class that comes with leather, then MBT is an extra cost.....the explanation lies in what MB has installed on the production run as compared to what it would cost them to do a special order.

Maybe that is one of the reasons why M-B tex is so durable - they dispensed with the stitching.

My 1987 300SE was sold to me as having Leather Seats but I took one look and told the salesman it had M-B Tex. He wouldn't believe me but the M-B Tex seats had the pleats running the entire length of the seat cushion and seat back whereas leather has the pleated area as an insert .

I guess thats due to the plastic "Welding" that they need the pleats to run the entire length of the cushion and back rest.

Hi all

"The real Godfather here"  :D Gee I wish.  I'd have quite a MB collection by now.  married into the wrong family I did. I'm awake again. I worked last night, what else is there to do other than post, TV is boring after midnight. ;D

MB-Tex.
I do love quality leather in top condition. I suppose most 116 leather interiors these days don't do justice to what they were like when new, but no one would convert the leather IMO if it was as new.
However, my 350's Mb -Tex is in such good nic I wouldn't contemplating on changing it over.  What's more amazing is that in it's 380k km, 33 yr history, it has had very little if any, care or preventative maintenace. I've only tried to clean it once.  Wear has only occured to the drivers door mould where one puts their arm whilst driving and looking cool. Driver's seat has also cracked piping and a crack in the panel that recieves the most wear when getting in and out.  It's remarkable stuff IMO.  The rear cushions are cactus but the MB-Tex is as good as new I kid you not.

One other point,

The 280s has a much thinner type of MB-tex.  Is very sticky when hot (it is clean btw). It also becomes very soft whereas the 350se feels thicker and one can still slide into the driver's seat on a hot day.  There must have been two different types of MB Tex.
Can anyone confirm?

My 240D has tex the 450 sel is leather.  Major difference.  It's recliner vs. ball park seat.  Maybe not so bad.  But the tex is SO DURABLE.  There are two things Mercedes made that will last forever:  cast iron blocks and tex seats!

MBT gets my vote every time. Well, except on those days I've been to Bondi and get back in without a shirt. YUCK!!!
Worse than sand in yr Speedos.

Three of my Benzes have M-B Tex and one has leather. I have driven Benzes with each kind of seat covering, including velour and checked cloth.

Leather wins on smell (mmm - so luxurious a scent).
Velour wins on comfort (no sliding around, grips one firmly).
Checked cloth - mmm - not sure about that one, but I don't think it looks appropriate in a luxury car (though okay in, say, a W123).
M-B Tex wins on durability (can't kill it).

The Tex seats in my W111 are, although slightly faded and dull from a life in the outdoors, still in amazingly good condition. Those in my W108 are still like new (after 516,000+ miles - except for two small cuts under the driver's bum). The Tex seats in my 116 are still perfect. The leather in my W112 coupe isn't too bad for its age, but could use a Leatherique treatment as it's getting dry; that car is the best-kept and lowest-mileage example of the four, but the seat coverings are the least impressive.

Admittedly, with top-end models such as the 112, and 450SE(L)s, 6.9s, etc. one expects leather - but it's not necessarily the most practical or best value.

The most durable material is M-B Tex with Sheepskins fitted.

Oh and M-B Tex doesn't "creak" when it gets old.

Ah - so I need M-B Tex joints (knees, not smokables).

Old  seats in 126's with leather make creaking noises as you drive along - MB tex doesn't.

My 116 with leather and sheepskins doesn't - maybe we should start a "Creak" thread.

My knees and ankles click - but then they're not MB tex are they. ;D

Too right all right!

I just hope Sheepskins are fairly durable, since upon looking it up my sheepskins will cost $1500 to replace...EEEAK! :o Thats nearly what I payed for the car...
