Left front door panel removal?

I have already looked at this post: http://forum.w116.org/mechanicals/central-locking-problems/msg6838/#msg6838

Is there any way to get the chrome thing from around the door lever off or do you have to leave it on and pull the Tex off like he did? (I have a back door that the "pull" has lost its bolt and now comes out when you try and pull the door closed. I would like to fix that as well).

Thanks,

Hi 330SDude

When I removed the door card, I removed some of the peripherals, like the upright trim on the window, the door lock surround etc.  The door lever/pull is actually really easy.  You just pop the black plastic liner out that sits behind the door pull.  Once out, it will expose a phillips head screw, which you remove, then the chrome ring surround can be carefully slid down the door grab handle.  Then remove the screws from the door grab handle (two in my case, one at the door pull end, the other at the bottom outer edge of the door pull arm rest section), and you should be done.  Do not pull the door card towards yourself, it must be lifted upwards or you will break the retaining clips that are integral to the plastic door card surround and are irreplaceable!  (You may need to do something with your door lock knobs, mine are of a slim cylindrical design; I presume that are of an anti-theft design as you cannot do the old coat hanger trick on these door lock knobs, and don't need to be removed at all to free the door card.)

Hope this helps

There's a black plastic insert that hides a screw holding the chrome door lever surround in, carefully pick the plastic piece out using a pointy tool to compress an edge towards the centre.

Thanks to both of you for your help!

If/when I pull the panel up (not towards me), once it is free, can I pull it somewhat towards me to see the black inner liner thing? (I can see that on Oscars picture on the thread I posted above).

OK, I actually got the door panel out far enough to look at what I wanted to. (I see why my vacuum door locks don't work, they aren't hooked-up, lol). I was looking at the power window motor connection because that window quit working. It is not the switch, I have checked it with the other windows and it works fine, so it has to be between the switch and the window. I checked the fuse, and the fuse is fine and the right rear window works (which is what that fuse goes to, left front and right rear window motors [fuse #16]).

The only connection I can see to the power window is something that is mounted (with screws) to a piece in the door. Does anyone know if there is a plug in on that end, or is it hard-wired in?

Dude, not sure if you got the whole card off yet but I made a quick video at work just now to show how it's done to remove the "black inner lining thing", I don't know what's it called.  You'll then easily see the screw that holds the chrome piece in plus the much larger screw that holds the top of the armrest's handle in place.

As for the window electrics question, I have four doors at home with electrics removed from the car. If noone else chimes in with specifics I'll attack one in the morning (my time) to help answer the question.

Please remove the panel completely as described in job 72-100 in the library otherwise there is a risk the plastic hooks on the back of the door card will break off.

There are two screw connections between the motor and the wiring that goes out through the door front edge. I suggest you disconnect the two wires from the motor and feed 12 Volts directly to the motor to make sure it works.

Thanks, I ended-up not needing to take it completely off as of yet.
