Title: Leaks = floor pan rust
Post by: MARCEDES on 21 April 2019, 11:52 PM
Crew,

Got my hands on an upgrade. Pretty stoked as it's had two owners, the guy I bought off had it since '82. Really looked after it but sadly failed to notice the corrosion from firewall / window seal leaks (TBC which).

I have someone to assist with repairs to the front passenger floor pan (first priority). I understand these are available new and pretty reasonably priced. Anyone had experience purchasing these?

Please see below for correspondence between myself and a company in the US. Is anyone able to confirm?

It is designed to fit 1974 W116 280SE, but it has never been formally tested on a right hand drive, so it's not guaranteed to work unfortunately...

Hi,

Can you please confirm if this part will suit a 1974 W116 280SE? If so, it appears that this would be suitable for the passenger's side (front) in a right hand drive vehicle. Could you please confirm that also.

Thanks for your time. I look forward to your reply.

Indeed, any water leaks are bad news and the sound deadening pads on the floor soak it all up.

Congrats on the purchase though and good luck with the repairs. The LHD part should fit you would think, or at least I'm sure it could be made to fit.

On second thoughts, that panel in the pic appears to be for the W114/5... I'd be wanting to confirm that. The alternative is having a flat panel fabricated and welded in locally.

Cheers TJ. The guy reckons it suits the W116, RHD TBC. I can't imagine it to be too different. At least the general shape will be there. Probably a head start on having a flat panel custom made to fit (that was my first thought).

Looks like you had the same issue with yours Nathan. Common as in these it seems. I'm hoping my side sill isn't rusty also. Looks like yours wasn't. I'll get some photos up when I get to removing all the carpet and seat. Who did you use for your work?

We use Rowe and sons in Paddington, they have restored many of our cars.
my sills were fine.  Interestingly I had my firewall done 10 pus year ago, never saw this rust from the top a its covered with that insulation stuff. it was only when my exhaust was dropped for the engine bay that the heat shields were removed and revealed it'!
