I Found A Nice W116 Roof Rack

It seems impossible to find period-correct roof racks for our cars that actually fit, but I finally found some.

They are stainless steel and they exactly fit the distance between the sunroof and the rear of the roof. The mounting brackets on the side also line up right where the roof molding stops.

There are suction cups on each corner. There are also 6 wooden slats that go over the metal, but they are bare pine and will need to be stained.

I found that they also fit the older models well, so I'll be installing one on my roommate's car. These were all test fits before properly installing them.

Nice work,

But, how much luggage do you really need to carry ?  8)

The trunk space seems to be lacking compared to the 1968 200D fintail I used to drive. But, five wheels with tires mounted will fit in the trunk, so that's not bad.

i don't think that you found a nice w116  roof rack at all, and i think those white walls look like shit as well (grin).
At the same time i must say that i like your enthusiasm there Squigg.  i've got a rack on mine that is off a VW Transporter and it screws / clamps down on to the drip rail, stands up high but can take 3 sets of scaffold or three stepladders and planks...  and the chassis looks better with 15 inch rims. Once i pick up another camera i'll send in some photos of Guderian, i call him Hans, the MIG welder has arrived and the fun is about to begin, i'll be pulling parts off of Rommel and bestowing them upon Guderian. Rommel is #6062 and Guderian is # 21923 both

I see adjustable width, so I guess these are a generic part not made for any particular car?  Do the mounts have rubber lining or something to prevent scratching?  I'd like to see what they look like with the wood installed.

Squiggle Dog

The width is adjustable. The feet have rubber cups and there are metal clips on each side that contact the roof drip rail trim. A piece of electrical tape can be stuck on the clip so that it won't scratch the trim. I'm probably going to install mine tomorrow, but I won't put on the wood because it is raw and needs to be stained and varnished.

I'm currently staining and varnishing the wooden slats. It has taken all week.

The 1965 W111 220S is my housemate's car. He bought it for $500 from a person who had installed a new Weber carburetor kit, new complete exhaust system, new tires, new brakes, new steering components, new shock absorbers, reupholstered seats, and an amateur wood refinish, and didn't want to pay to store the car anymore.

I was replacing the windshield seals and adding green tinted glass, but the aftermarket seals were a horrible waste of money, so we ordered ones from Mercedes. Then we decided to replace the headliner and ordered an aftermarket one from Turkey that not only was poor quality, but wasn't even the correct headliner after plainly stating what car it was for. Now we are waiting for a replacement and to be honest I don't think the replacement is going to be good quality.

What's that white wagon in the background there Squiggle? Tailights are saying Ford galaxie to me, never seen one like that here though, looks good, it's all nicely in proportion. Very cool. Actually that pic looks to me like it could be from a 60's movie, I bet not much has changed.

Squiggle Dog

The station wagon is my housemate's 1965 Ford Country Sedan (Galaxie). He bought it for $400 and it even had new tires. It used to belong to the Red Cross. After buying it up north, a friend and I replaced the fuel pump, water pump, belts, hoses, alternator, plugs, points, etc. then drove it here for him. It was his daily driver for a year until he was able to repair his Mercury Capri.

Old cars can be bought very inexpensively in the area. I was noticing, however, that in Arizona where we will be moving, old cars are very, very expensive--probably due to everyone wanting rust-free southwestern cars.
