Hood adjustment
« on: 15 September 2018, 05:03 AM »
Question,

The hood on the 6.9 isn't aligned with the scuttle, it's sitting about 5 or 6 mm higher. How can I lower it?

Just fitted a replacement and it didn't line up at all. There is front and back adjustment on the mounts and also I found on the bolts through the parcel shelf. I think if you have it two near the front or a side then it doesn't sit on the seal properly.

Sorry we are talking about different things but I think it still applies. Is it aligned at the front and are the shut lines equal? I would think, if there has been no alteration to the fixings, then perhaps it is just too near the back and needs pulling forwards. It doesn't take much.

Marku, the entire front of the car sans the hood is removed for rust repair, so it's quite hard to adjust the hood that way. But if we mount a fender with about the same gaps as the doors it alings perfectly with the hood at the front. And the gap between the hood and the scuttle looks good (also about the same as the doors). So i'm not sure if pushing the hood forward is the right thing to do.

You are probably right I have been surprised that there is little adjustment on these panels perhaps Mercedes rely on the build quality! I don't think that you can lower the hinges and the only visible adjustment is forward or back. I can't find any mention of it in the shop manual.

I've got hood alignment issues too.  It's about 4mm too high at the rear passenger side.  And what's a scuttle?  thx,

My comment about moving it forward slightly was because of the same problem I had with the boot lid when I fitted the replacement. I had it too far back because I wanted a narrow shut line and could not figure out why it was to high. I then realised that it must be the panel moulding underneath that was fouling the seal. I had also replaced the seal and it was standing high. Pulled it forward, not much, as there isn't much movement but it was solved. I know there is no seal to speak of under the bonnet but there is that which runs along the top edge of the scuttle. The manual hardly mentions removing and fitting the bonnet unlike the boot lid which it goes into in detail. It also says that access to the hinge requires removing the wing. But that only gives you access to the spring support fixing. I haven't looked but I guess that the bonnet hinge fixing is under the scuttle (the bit under the windscreen) on the inside but I can't see there being any adjustment any adjustment after the shut lines are simply adjusted by the robber stops.

Have checked and access to the bonnet hinge is under the wing at the very top. There is a cut out which extends from the engine bay and as the manual says access requires the removal of the wing. If there is any adjustment it is there.
